The best holiday I ever had was in Sorrento. It is a truly magical place that I will never forget and I hope to visit it again when I can afford it (it wasn't a cheap holiday). I stayed in a hotel called 'The Sorrento Palace' which was absolutely beautiful. The first time I walked into the hotel my mouth just fell open because I had never stayed anywhere as grand as that. It has a six-tier pool, several restaurants and bars, a gym, and a small shop. The bedrooms are air-conditioned which was nice because it was so hot while I was there. The most memorable parts of my stay here were: The food (four course meal every night); and the piano bar.
Sorrento town is beautiful. The locals are so friendly. There are two harbours which are both worth a visit. One is a little walk away from the town and this is where the locals have their fishing boats. This is really beautiful, it was interesting to see how the locals live. I couldn't really comment on the beach because the pool at my hotel was so fantastic that I didn't go there. I have heard that it is black because Sorrento is a volcanic region.
I went on three day trips, to Rome, Pompeii, and Vesuvius, which were all quite near. I wasn't impressed with Vesuvius, although my mum though that it was wonderful. It was an exhausting walk, not because it is particularly steep or long, but because of the heat. The top of Vesuvius in my opinion looks like a big ditch, but there are great views for miles around. Pompeii was very interesting but again what spoilt it for me was the heat. I'm still glad I went to Pompeii though, it has been maintained very well and everything can still be seen from the Romans' houses to their brothels. Rome was beautiful but needed much longer than a day to look around. The Vatican City was immaculate, but the rest of Rome was slightly confusing in its' mix between old and new architecture. I would definitely recommend a visit though.
It was surprising how green Sorrento was. It was not like other hot places which tend to be burnt and dry. Sorrento's lush countryside had many citrus fruit orchards and vineyards. There are a lot of places to eat at and the food everywhere was gorgeous, but in my opinion all Italian food is!
Ideal for a cultural sightseeing holiday, but the nightlife was a little subdued. I strongly recommend that you don't go at the height of the season if you want to do anything other than sit at the pool because it is too hot.

Excellent op - you really bring the place to life. I've always wanted to visit Sorrento and will certainly go for the hotel you used if I can afford it. Cheers.
