Beautiful Montserrat

Advantages: No Place Compares
Disadvantages: Volcano threat at Present

I am surprised that no one has written about the beautiful island of Montserrat and how it was before the terrible volcano. Montserrat is a small island in the west indies, (roughly 4 miles round) very close to Antigua and Barbuda which you can see from Montserrat on a clear day (which is usually)! The Island has much greenery and is named the Emerald Isle. This stems from when the island had Irish inhabitants during the times of the Slave Trade. There are still Irish influences on the island, especially when you notice the Montserratians surnames. There is also a strong English influence on the island, place names such as Plymouth (it's capital) and the sight of Red phone and letter boxes. Much of the island is greenery, and the roads are dirt tracks; there are no traffic lights on the island. There are no pubs, there ...

My harbour from the storms of life-volcano update

Advantages: Weather, tranquility, people, diving, volcano
Disadvantages: cost and volcano

I have traveled out to Montserrat 4 times over the last years, as part of my PhD work. I have found a friendly and resilient population on a beautiful island which has been hit by several tragedies, the latest being the volcanic eruption. The island is recovering and is still a wonderful place to visit. BEFORE THE ERUPTION The island is named after a monastery in Spain, as the hills of the island reminded Columbus of this place. It was first settled by Catholic Irish people around 1632 and still keeps it links with Ireland. It is known as the Emerald Isle, and the stamp for your passport is very pretty, in the shape of a shamrock! Before the eruption, the island was a paradise which was home to around 15000 people. The majority of which lived in the capital city of Plymouth, which is to the west of the Soufriere Hills in ...

The volcano Nea Kameni really is a holiday hot spot.

Advantages: walking on a volcano is a once in a life time experience
Disadvantages: walking on a volcano is very hot and tiring.

Santorini is a volcanic island, this is what makes Santorini different from most other Greek islands. The volcano that is now a tourist attraction as well as a site of scientific interest has with each eruption shaped the landscape of the island. Cruise ship sail into the caldera; so that the passengers can marvel at the dramatic rock formations that have been formed there and so that the cruise liners guests can visit Ia (Oia). Tourists from all over the world visit the volcano Nea Kameni which is a national geological park. They are taken there from Thira port, Santorini and trek up the slopes of the volcano and to look at different rock formations formed from the larva flows. The last time Nea Kameni erupted was in 1950, no predictions are given as to when the next eruption will be. You get to Nea Kameni on a boat trip and are ...
