Soon there will be holidays and like every year the beaches of Spain, Italy and Turkey will be full again. But there are also other countries around the Mediterranien Sea, for example Croatia which I will visit this year.
Last year, I had my first holidays without my parents and so, without much money, they weren’t many possibilities where to go. Two friends and me, we finally decided to travel to Sousse in Tunisia (only 1000 Marks or 320 GBP).
At first I was really afraid. It‘ s nation of the Islam, we had no boy with us, we would fly with TunisAir and we would be in Hotel Phenix, which has only
two stars. Well, the flight was OK. If I had known that there was no plane of TunisAir which yet crashed down I would have been much more relaxed and would have ignored all the noise the machine made.
Tunisia has no summer time and so we had to subtrract one hour (two hours from British time).
After two and a half hour we arrived at the airport in Monastir (you only need your identity card, if you are a tourist) and one hour later we were in the third biggest town of Tunisia – Sousse. The first big surprise was the hotel. It really doesn’t look like only two stars. The whole two weeks I haven’t seen one insect, we hade something where we could cook, a balcony, an air-condition and even a small swimming-pool with a terrace and deck-chairs. The breakfast also tasted not bad, you only should have some time (the waiters there are slow like in France and sometimes it is no more funny if you are really hungry and they bring only one plate every time) The only real problem was, that you couldn’t sleep very well, because of the disco next to it.
The beach in Sousse is fantastic. For only one and a half Dinar (I think this are 75 cents) you could have one matt and a sunshade for the whole day. This is really neccessary, because it’s always more than 35º Celsius. It’s a soft wind which make it much more agreeable, but which also make your clothes full of the sand. After this holidays I have to buy a new photo camera, cause my one was full of this. However, there are no toilets on the beach. I saw nothing swimming in the sea, but we must always walk back to the hotel and this wasn’t really funny at all.
Sousse has a well known Medina. You can go by taxi, if you don’t want to walk. Paying only for the car and not for the persons it’s really cheap (one Dinar or 50 cents). But you should take something to drink with you, because it’s hard to get and very expensive there. You will need it: the Medina is on a little mountain and so you often have to walk up- and downstairs. The greatest part of the Medina is full of shops and stands where you can buy jewels or water pipes. Like in every country of the Islam you have to haggle and this could take very much time. If have no joy by doing so you could buy your souvenirs in the Soula Center next to the old town wall of the Medina. There they have fixed prices, however it is often crowded.
In Sousse are many restaurants and you should take some time to find a nice one: some are really expensive and the personnel isn’t friendly at all. Luckily, these are only some.
There are no more other interesting things to watch in Sousse and the other activities like the three hours travel with the pirate ship, the camel tour or water skiing takes much money. But the second week was so boring, that we finally spent the 20 Dinars (10 pounds) for the travel with the pirate ship. I really enjoyed it. The ship is always near the caost and so you could see Sousse “from the other side“ and the meal you get there also tasted very well. You should take care not to get a sunburn and not to get sea-sick like one of my friends, because the ship swayed very much.
This is all you can do in Sousse, but from there it is not far away to the dessert or to Tunis. You can visit El Kantoui, which is only ten kilometers away and which has a famous and good-looking harbour, a great gulf place and many cheap and nice restaurants. Like everywhere, you can also go there by taxi (3 Dinars).
Finally, I want to say something about the men there. It hasn’t been so horrible like I have imagined. We always found something to say, so that the walked away. But after the sun set, it wasn’t nice at all. One time we decided to walk to the beach to photograph the sun rise (we only do so for one time) and it needed only a few minutes and we had a couple of Tunisain around.
Have much fun there and be careful: Some Tunisian are specialists in cheating tourists. I don’t know if the speak English there, but I think so. Otherwise: All of them speak French.
