A Mini town in itself
Review of Spier Hotel, Stellenbosch by
zillis
Advantages: Everything you need all under one 'roof'
Disadvantages: Not as personal as some of the smaller boutique hotels
...I stayed at the Spier Hotel (or 'The Village at Spier' which it's also referred to) for 2 nights in December 2006 as part of my Honeymoon. We did a self drive along the Garden Route and this was one of our stops, we chose this hotel as we thought it would be a good base for our wine tasting adventures in and around Stellenbosch. The Hotel was easy to find (about 10 minute drive from Stellenbosch town centre) and upon arrival check in was easy and ... ...information was given to us about the facilities). As the Hotel is so big we were transported with our luggage to our room via a 'Golf Cart' driving to our room seemed to take quite a while however later we discovered the walk was quicker??!
Accomodation consists of 2 storey blocks and the whole place looks like a pretty little village instead of a hotel. The room itself was big, high ceilings, stone floors and lots of space - only a couple of bits ...

Very relaxing stay
Review of Oudtshoorn Hotel & Resort, Oudtshoorn by
dragz
Advantages: close to town centre
Disadvantages: gift shop not open during normal hours
Him in doors and myself stayed here for a couple of days in January to break our journey before travelling onto meet my parents in St Francis Bay. The hotel was really easy to find, which I can tell you is no mean feat with me navigating. The hotel is a large resort with excellent facilities such as a good size swimming pool and smaller plunge pool. They also have an outdoor barbeque which I understand you can use if you have prior permission from ... ...I was supposed to be on holiday! The room we stayed in was quite big with two king sized beds, air conditioning and satellite TV, and very good tea/coffee making facilities. The hotel had a gift shop but it appeared that it was never open I heard, after we left the hotel that the owner closes the shop between 9am and 5pm which makes you wonder if it makes any money at all?
The bar area, which was extensively vetted by him in doors was also clean ...

The Palms Retreat and Restaurant, Wilderness
Review of Palms, Wilderness by
Fluffkin74
Advantages: Great food, beautiful decor, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Absolutley nothing!
My husband and I spent two nights in The Palms in Wilderness in February and we can say without hesitation that this truly is a gem in the Garden Route. Where Wilderness itself is a little unspectacular (An opinion which is possibly tainted somewhat by the grey and rainy weather) - It does sit in a perfect position to take your pick from a plethora of outing possibilities. Your only problem may be that there is so much to choose from. The Palms itself ... ...oasis… Nestled in lush gardens the rooms are secluded and private and finished with a combination of cool African chic and attention to detail which begs the question as to how a fifth star is missing from their official ratings. But this is not pretentious chic, this is natural, comfortable-in-its-own-skin chic. Somehow the proprietors have managed to create something that oozes luxury without being in the least bit showy. (The only conclusion we ...

Relaxation in Beautiful surroundings
Review of Cathedral Peak Hotel, Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park by
ClaudineNel
Advantages: Babysitting available, Afternoon Tea
Disadvantages: A bit off the beaten track
We stayed here in September 2006 for a weekend on our way to the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast, and loved every minute.
Firstly it is a bit of a drive through villages, dodging cows and chickens, but once you are there it is pure paradise. Clear, fresh air, a stately country hotel surrounded by beautiful mountains, the Drakensberg.
We booked a family room as we have a five year old and a baby. The room was a real surprise, it was huge and actually ... ...first room were two single beds and the cot set up and made up, and then in the second room was a double bedroom and doors going out onto the patio. This was ideal so that we could have some privacy, but still be close enough to hear the baby.
The hotel is quite remote, so I think it only offers Dinner, Bed & Breakfast, but the food was delicious. They also had high tea on the patio with coffee (or milk for the kids) and delicious biscuits. This ...
