Luxurious, tranquil retreat in the Eastern Cape
Advantages: Luxurios accomodation, fantastic hosts, amazing secnery Disadvantages: Long drive
Sederkloof Lodge, set in the Baviaanskloof Mountain, in the Eastern Cape boasts a luxurious and tranquil environment, hidden away in the mountains. Run by Thys and Alice Cilliers, Sederkloof consists of 6 private chalets, each hosting 2 people, and a communal lodge area complete with dining area, bar, lounge and pool. At 1,500 rand per person a night it may seem an expensive luxury but one that is well worth the money. When a friend recommended a ... ...The journey to Sederkloof was fairly long and arduous as it was mainly via a dirt road so we couldn't get very far very fast in our little rental Yaris. However the scenery more than made up for the gruelling drive, despite the fact that certain sections of the road were dangerous (there had been pretty bad flooding before we took our trip) our excitement to be in the mountains and reach our beautiful tranquil retreat kept us in good spirits. On ...

The Palms Retreat and Restaurant, Wilderness
Advantages: Great food, beautiful decor, friendly staff Disadvantages: Absolutley nothing!
My husband and I spent two nights in The Palms in Wilderness in February and we can say without hesitation that this truly is a gem in the Garden Route. Where Wilderness itself is a little unspectacular (An opinion which is possibly tainted somewhat by the grey and rainy weather) - It does sit in a perfect position to take your pick from a plethora of outing possibilities. Your only problem may be that there is so much to choose from. The Palms itself ... ...oasis… Nestled in lush gardens the rooms are secluded and private and finished with a combination of cool African chic and attention to detail which begs the question as to how a fifth star is missing from their official ratings. But this is not pretentious chic, this is natural, comfortable-in-its-own-skin chic. Somehow the proprietors have managed to create something that oozes luxury without being in the least bit showy. (The only conclusion we ...

Relaxation in Beautiful surroundings
Advantages: Babysitting available, Afternoon Tea Disadvantages: A bit off the beaten track
We stayed here in September 2006 for a weekend on our way to the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast, and loved every minute.
Firstly it is a bit of a drive through villages, dodging cows and chickens, but once you are there it is pure paradise. Clear, fresh air, a stately country hotel surrounded by beautiful mountains, the Drakensberg.
We booked a family room as we have a five year old and a baby. The room was a real surprise, it was huge and actually ... ...first room were two single beds and the cot set up and made up, and then in the second room was a double bedroom and doors going out onto the patio. This was ideal so that we could have some privacy, but still be close enough to hear the baby.
The hotel is quite remote, so I think it only offers Dinner, Bed & Breakfast, but the food was delicious. They also had high tea on the patio with coffee (or milk for the kids) and delicious biscuits. This ...

Worthwhile diversion from the Garden Route
Advantages: Restful, relaxing, intimate atmosphere Disadvantages: Old world style may not be your cup of tea
This hotel is one of the venues that we stayed in while travelling along the Garden Route on Honeymoon. Oudtshoorn is further inland than we had originally intended on travelling, however the opportunity to travel across the mountains and see more of South Africa was difficult to overlook.
We stumbled across this hotel on the internet and felt that it would be a perfect place to stay as it is out of town, but very close to local attractions.
The ... ...eight generations of the Schoeman family. It has always been farming land for tobacco, fruit, vegetables and ostriches and despite the buildings being converted into the hotel, there is still an ostrich farm nest door.
The hotel is made up of a number of buildings including the old Farm House, Stables and Milking parlour which all date back to 1830. All of them have been converted into quaint en-suite bedrooms which all have an amazing rustic charm ...
