The Palms Retreat and Restaurant, Wilderness
Review of Palms, Wilderness by
Fluffkin74
Advantages: Great food, beautiful decor, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Absolutley nothing!
My husband and I spent two nights in The Palms in Wilderness in February and we can say without hesitation that this truly is a gem in the Garden Route. Where Wilderness itself is a little unspectacular (An opinion which is possibly tainted somewhat by the grey and rainy weather) - It does sit in a perfect position to take your pick from a plethora of outing possibilities. Your only problem may be that there is so much to choose from. The Palms itself ... ...oasis… Nestled in lush gardens the rooms are secluded and private and finished with a combination of cool African chic and attention to detail which begs the question as to how a fifth star is missing from their official ratings. But this is not pretentious chic, this is natural, comfortable-in-its-own-skin chic. Somehow the proprietors have managed to create something that oozes luxury without being in the least bit showy. (The only conclusion we ...

Relaxation in Beautiful surroundings
Review of Cathedral Peak Hotel, Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park by
ClaudineNel
Advantages: Babysitting available, Afternoon Tea
Disadvantages: A bit off the beaten track
We stayed here in September 2006 for a weekend on our way to the Kwa Zulu Natal South Coast, and loved every minute.
Firstly it is a bit of a drive through villages, dodging cows and chickens, but once you are there it is pure paradise. Clear, fresh air, a stately country hotel surrounded by beautiful mountains, the Drakensberg.
We booked a family room as we have a five year old and a baby. The room was a real surprise, it was huge and actually ... ...first room were two single beds and the cot set up and made up, and then in the second room was a double bedroom and doors going out onto the patio. This was ideal so that we could have some privacy, but still be close enough to hear the baby.
The hotel is quite remote, so I think it only offers Dinner, Bed & Breakfast, but the food was delicious. They also had high tea on the patio with coffee (or milk for the kids) and delicious biscuits. This ...

Worthwhile diversion from the Garden Route
Review of De Opstal Country Lodge and Restaurant by
kate_mustoe
Advantages: Restful, relaxing, intimate atmosphere
Disadvantages: Old world style may not be your cup of tea
This hotel is one of the venues that we stayed in while travelling along the Garden Route on Honeymoon. Oudtshoorn is further inland than we had originally intended on travelling, however the opportunity to travel across the mountains and see more of South Africa was difficult to overlook.
We stumbled across this hotel on the internet and felt that it would be a perfect place to stay as it is out of town, but very close to local attractions.
The ... ...eight generations of the Schoeman family. It has always been farming land for tobacco, fruit, vegetables and ostriches and despite the buildings being converted into the hotel, there is still an ostrich farm nest door.
The hotel is made up of a number of buildings including the old Farm House, Stables and Milking parlour which all date back to 1830. All of them have been converted into quaint en-suite bedrooms which all have an amazing rustic charm ...

A Supreme African Wilderness
Review of Skukuza Restcamp, Kruger National Park by
Skaap
Advantages: You're in the heart of the park
Disadvantages: It's in the Malaria zone, risk in summer
...since childhood.
CAMPS
Skukuza in the main camp in the park, and although that makes it the busiest, it is one the most animal rich areas as well. Serviced by an airport, it's easy to get to and from Johannesburg and you have all the comforts of restaurants, a library, shops and cottages and huts for any budget and comfort level. We stayed in a cottage with a separate bedroom, bathroom, living area with fold out beds for kids, if you have them, ... ...the cottage; an amazing experience.
Skukuza also has a new day visitor area, if you'd rather stay in a quieter camp and just stop there for the day, and that also has a swimming pool and barbeque facilities.
The other camps are generally quieter than Skukuza, which is like a little town. The main camps all have shops and petrol stations, mobile phone reception and restaurants. Some have swimming pools. Most camps now run night drives with rangers, ...
