Thomas at the South Devon Railway

Advantages: Very pretty, well located to combine with other attractions
Disadvantages: Expensive, lack of display space, no platform tickets available

The South Devon Railway is, as the name suggests, a railway situated in South Devon, running steam trains from Totnes to Buckfastleigh. I visited with my family in May 2007, on a special “Day Out with Thomas” weekend.

There are three working stations on the line: Buckfastleigh, Staverton and Totnes Littlehempstone. If you are travelling by car, it’s best to head to Buckfastleigh station where there is extensive free parking just off ...
...can be found on the South Devon Railway website, www.southdevonrailway.org. I would thoroughly recommend taking this picturesque journey, as you get a great view of the surrounding countryside and Buckfast Abbey itself. The round trip only takes around 15 minutes and was the highlight of our visit, as they were operating an open-top vehicle. Also making an appearance was “Bertie” the railway bus, and “Bulgy”, who as fans of Thomas the Tank Engine ... more

The Colonel's all steamed up!

Advantages: Part of an enjoyable day out.
Disadvantages: Not really enough for a full day.

The South Devon Railway. This is another of those preserved railways that runs steam trains and sometimes diesel trains. The original line was closed down during the 60's not due to Dr Beaching I might add but other financial considerations. The line now is some 7 miles in length from Totnes to Buckfastleigh. The original terminus was at Ashburton but that part has gone now, possibly under road improvements and it is unlikely to return. The line ...
...can be a very pleasant journey along the river bank with the Dart rushing along towards the sea. There is only one intermediate station and that is at Staverton. The journey time being some 30 mins for the whole journey. This line is single and having only one train in steam on it at any one time. They do have quite a bit of various stock and this can be observed along the route at Staverton and at Buckfastleigh. I do not believe it is allowable ...

...proper steam train. Taking in the wonderful scenery from Buckfastleigh to Totnes. We went in the summer and it was a fantastic journey beside the river Dart t. The trains are clean and comfortable, in my opinion much better than the trains of today. The children enjoyed the ride and the ability to get up and move around the train. Only trouble was the journey It is only about 5 miles (8 km) long which wasn’t long enough, to enjoy such a wonderful ...
