I've been a train traveller all my life and as neither of my parents drive I have got use to what our trains were like but recently i feel they have been getting worse.
For example i went to Southampton recently and the toilets were a total mess. There was no loo role as it was all over the floor, the tap water didn't run/flow properly, and the hand towels were non-existent. Also the door didn't close, as the lock didn't reach its fixing on the wall.
It's not only the toilets that are bad. On a hot day you would like a drink if you were gonna be on a train for 2 hours. So you would think there might at least be a buffet service, well you'd be wrong. There was no buffet in any of the carriages; there wasn't even a trolley service. So are we meant to die of dehydration? … well I guess the train companies just might think that!
There is also a lot of graffiti on the trains. You have windows with so many scratches in, that you cant see out without scribbled lines over everything and on some of the chairs they have spray paint all over it which is disgusting if you need a seat to sit on. Some of the seats are so loose at the bottom they fall off if you sit on them, which is not only poor facilities for the passengers but also a massive safety risk.
And as for safety they have the "break glass in case of emergency" and you have to brake it to get a hammer. Now most people have this special glass that you can brake easy but not all trains so what we meant to do if we crash? Brake our hand to get to the hammer? so we have so much blood we cant brake out of the train itself?
Another thing is the train times. Some times you have to wait up to an hour for your train to come and others they just cancel your trains without any warning..
The train's don't have very good disable facilities. They have a ramp but you don't get a nice place to sit you , you'd probably get put where all the bikes are kept on journeys.
The tickets are ok but you don't get them checked as often and sometimes the train fairs are a bit expensive.
Anyway that's what i think but please write a opinion to tell me how you feel about it
I live in the SW but rarely use trains - however a recent trip from Angmering Sussex to London Victoria on a Friday evening was an absolute nightmare - I still shudder at the experience - so beware Connex too.

very thoughtful and considerate opinion. The state of trains in the UK is frightening particularly the safety aspect. I too, have often wondered how do you break that glass if you need too! the standards do seem to be declining. A very informative opinion, thank you.
