My partner and I stayed at the South Hampton Guest House for a weekend in early 2006. We choose the property because it was reasonably close to the centre of Cambridge Township (about 15-20 minutes walk) and also for it's price. We paid £45/night for the two of us including breakfast. The general décor was nothing to marvel about, a bit pokey and very old fashioned. However, keeping in mind what we paid our stay was reasonable.
The rooms (I think there were 4 or 5 in total) were on the small side. Ours was fitted with a double bed, a single chair, one bedside table, a small wardrobe with several drawers attached and a tv mounted on the wall. There was a little side tray containing tea, coffee milk and a few biscuits. There was very little room for much else and we had to store our 1 suitcase on top of the wardrobe. There was also an en suite with a toilet and shower.
The breakfast was served downstairs in a dining room. There is the option of a fully booked breakfast - eggs, bacon, sausage, tomatoes or beans or mushrooms. This also includes cereal and toast. The other option is a continental breakfast which was a little disappointing. The cooked breakfast was a standard English Breakfast, pretty much what you would expect, but nothing exceptional. The continental breakfast was simply white toast with a range or spreads (marmite, jam, honey and marmalade) and a choice of several cereals. I would've expected some fruit but this was not served. Also during the weekend breakfast was served between 7.30-9am, I would've expected them to serve breakfast a little later, say until 10am.
We only meet the lady owner of the guest house who is French (couldn't remember her name sorry!). She was courteous although at times abrupt and could've been a bit friendlier.
If you are after a cheapish B and B in Cambridge within walking distance to the city and don't expect to spend much time in the guest house then I would recommend the South Hampton Guest House. However keep in mind that everything is on the basic side.
