Southampton is soon to have a new baby - the new west quay devolopment opens on 28th September 2000 - this new shopping extravaganza will be in the top 10 in europe! The 2 main stores are john lewis and Marks and Spencer - with hundreds of others and food halls catering for over 2000 it will be the place to be from now on. How you will get there may be a problem though... .Southampton is awash with roadworks at the moment - if you can get into town ok you can be sure you cannot get out! We are told that parking charges will be high and will apply on sundays for the first time. Southampton has a very large student population. Southampton is rich in history.. we have the original medieval walls surrounding the coty and the bargate which was originally the gateway to the city - we have several museums one of which houses info and exhibits on the titanic which left southampton on its fateful voyage. Southanpton is generally a nice place to live, although we do have a few `bad areas` we are uck compared to other parts of the country - although we may feel poor we are obviously not compared to others. We do not have an icerink in the city - this is a local issue that many find unnaccepatable - we have a whole generation who have grown up not knowing how to skate. Southampton has very pretty park and a woderful common that has an outdoor splashpool for the children in summer months. we have a new olympic swimming pool.
