Croatia itself is an upcoming area to go on holiday. It has truly amazing sceneries with great weather, gorgeous mountains and beaches...and all for quite a reasonable price!
If you're going to Croatia, Split is a must. It is on the coast of the Adriatic Sea and wonderfully situated so that you can very easily hop on a ferry and head to an island nearby.
When we went to Split, we stayed a short bus ride away in an area called Omis. Here there are many campsites, which when we arrived were absolutely packed with people of all ages, so you may want to book in advance. We did manage to squeeze into one though luckily. Omis as a small area has a lot to offer- supermarkets, beaches, night-time markets... If however, you want more to do I would stay in Split, here there are lots of watersport activities including sailing for you to do.
Split is a reasonably large town (for Croatia anyways), and here it is that you will find the markets and better nightlife. I would seriously recommend that you go to the Diocesian Palace, and walk through the tunnel which is filled with stalls selling jewellery and other bric-a-brac and cool stuff. By the harbour there are many nice cafes, bars and ice cream parlours where you can sit and admire the view of the very calm and clear waters of the Adriatic Sea.
As mentioned earlier Split is situated in a great place for visiting the islands. It was a friend's 18th birthday when we were in Croatia, so to celebrate we went to the island called Brac, (although there is also the Hvar Island, which is slightly further away and apparently also worht a visit). We took a short ferry ride (about an hour), from Split port to Supetar on Brac island. The ferries themselves are very frequent, just go to a small shop and ask for prices first...as when we went there were 2 companies, one which was cheaper and a shorter ride than the other for some reason!?
Brac is a very pretty island, with absolutely amazing scenery. However, getting from one side of the island to the other (Supertar to Bol in our case), it takes just over an hour bus journey. The journey itself although quite windy is a great way to see the whole island, and look down at the gorgeous coastlines of the island.
In Supetar we stayed in a nice apartment place, in general if you haven't planned ahead I'd just pay an immediate visit to the Tourist Information, as they tend to speak good English and although don't usually from my experience have the friendliest of tones, are very helpful. During the day, you can enjoy the amazing sunshine and beaches, whilst by night you can enjoy the buzz walking down the streets and looking at all the little stalls.
If you do go to Supetar-
1. Do go to the burger place near the bus station and if the nice young man is still working there...give him a smile from me!
2. Also go to the ice cream place just down the road (can't remember the name), it is a very nice cafe just opposite the tourist info and tends to have very friendly waiters, sometimes juggling outside! This is the place we managed to arrange a surprise birthday cake for our friend!
