Perfect Pinnawela

Advantages: seeing the elephants in the watering hole
Disadvantages: I didn't like the noisy area

...was a visit to the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Pinnewela Elephant Orphanage Pinnawela is situated near the town of Kegella, halfway between the capitol of Columbo and the town of Kandy. Pinnawela was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department. It was initially set up because elephants had become endangered, mainly because of people hunting them for their tusks, and party because of farmers killing them to protect their land and ...
...at Pinnawela. Pinnawela covers 24 acres and is also a breeding centre for elephants as well as taking in abandoned or injured elephants. Pinnawela boasts the largest herd of elephants in captivy in the world. The elephants are all trained to become working elephants, which in turn help the local people. Elephants that are born here are fitted with tracking devices and released into National Parks to live a free life. Getting There Obviously our ...

Is Asia Ancient... Airport Tour Part I

Advantages: Sometimes good
Disadvantages: Sometimes bad

...airports here, Singapore Changi and Colombo Bandranaike. Sure, many airports around Asia will be pretty nasty, but it’s the same in Europe. Ever been to Heathrow? Why we assume Asian airports to be dirty... If we’re going on holiday to Asia, we could well end up at Chennai airport or perhaps in Bangalore (opinion coming after Christmas). In these situations, you will end up at a dump, but that does not mean every airport in Asia is ...
...I may forget details. COLOMBO BANDRANAIKE AIRPORT Colombo International Airport, based at the capital of SriLanka, was rocked by terrorist attacks in July 2001. But they have picked up the pieces and are now trading as usual. More about the terrorist attacks later on, and what happened during them. I would like to say here that SriLanka is safe. You will not be mobbed by terrorists if you stick to the south, and in fact you will probably be safer ...

Dambulla cave Temple

Advantages: Lots of things for knowledge
Disadvantages: No

...from Colombo. Finding the Dambulla rock was easier than that. According to my knowledge it is 1118ft high from the see level. We had to climb up about 600ft to the famous rock temple "Dambulu Viharaya". (Dambulla Cave Temple). It is a series of caves turned into shrines. The view from the rock is magnificient. The first cave holds a recumbent image of the Lord Buddha. There were very beautyfil paintings and attractive statues of Lord Buddha in the ...
...on the rock is not a difficult task. We could crack jokes with the funny apes who were living at the rock permanently. We gave snacks for them. They were doing humorous things. So no one feel tired. There were lots of crypts on a long rocky plain. They denote the proud ness of Sri Lankan kings. Attempts of the old Sri Lankan artists are amazing. Dambulu Rock is a world heritage. We went to see another special place on our way to Colombo. There you ...

Sigiriya

Advantages: Knowledge on History
Disadvantages: wasps threat

Sigiriya is a huge Rock. Sigiriya Rock offers a splendid view for miles in all directions. From the top it is elliptical in plan. Its top is flat and slopes gradually along the elliptical axis. It was the kingdom of the King Kashyapa. When all the other kings selected Anuradhapura as their main controlling centre he was not interested. He was looking for a more protective place to establish the kingdom. So he has selected the Sigiriya fortress. King ...
...him. That was the reason to select Sigiriya as his kingdom. King Kashyapa has built Sigiriya fortress with the palace, gardens and the other royal buildings. Although you have to pass hundreds of stairs to see the ruins of that Kingdom of King Kashyapa it will be a unforgettable very valuable experience. Paintings in Sigiriya are world famous. There is a version that these paintings and the paintings at Ajantha group in India are almost alike. Paintigs ...
