I would like to say that SriLankan has now pretty much returned to a service level that it will continue with for about a year, and there is more information on their revamped website accessible on www.srilankan.lk. Their fleet now comprises of seven aircraft.
UPDATE 30 JULY
SriLankan have now confirmed the loss of three aircraft - two A330s and an A340. And three are damaged but apparently repairable. They have an emergency shedule in operation. All the latest information can be found at www.srilankan.lk.
And in an effort to fix the fleet, they are said to be considering several aircraft lease options and their 40% owner and 100% manager Emirates is said to be helping out but announced it won't be assisting by lending them aircraft.

But their website was kept up to date, and their services are resuming today. I must say, I have to congratulate SriLankan on their handling of this, and I must say I was rather saddened to hear that this had happened to them, as they are now Asian Airline of the Year.
ORIGINAL OPINION
**If you're wandering where I've been, I've been researching my new comment coming soon on Ciao** 'Welcome on board Sri Lankan airlines. We wish you a pleasant flight.' That's what I was told. And that, generally is what happened.
On nthe way out to Sri Lanka, from Heathrow, we - me and my family - were rather excited to be going to Sri Lanka. We had never been before, and were rather disappointed when we had to leave, but now, more about the airline.
Sri Lankan has only recently changed it's name form AirLanka - a good move because I think AirLanka sounds like the name of a German warplane. They have also upgraded their logo to a rather sexy bird, a bit like the percentage sign on the top of your keyboard.
They are introducing a new inflight entertainment system accross their fleet, which is fantastic - 18 video channels and 22 audio channels plus a special airshow which gives information of the aircraft's present position.
The cabin. Oh. The cabin. If you're in Economy, then you MUST try and get an aisle seat. If you're in business class, then recline your electronic seat and make those in the cabin behind you extremely jealous.
The food. Well, I suppose it's OK. On the way out, it was some curry. Reasonable. On the way back, it was Spanish Omlette - a la Spicy Sri Lankan way. Oh, and tip to all you there at Sri Lankan: the potatoes actually go INSIDE the omlette.
On the way back, I would like to comment that some person at UL Head Office obviously wanted to make sure the aircraft were stretched to the limit - you must be at the airport by 12 midnight for the flight that leaves at 2:45 in the morning.
The staff are very halpful and resourceful. We were suffering the cold - some wise guy had turned the cabin temperature down to minus two degrees. I asked them about it, and withing moments the cabin began to heat up.
Oh, and lastly, check-in at the airport happens the wrong way round. The last thng you do is hand over your bags. How bizzarre... (Don't comment and tell me I spelt bizzarre wrong!)
Advantages: Great Food and Crew, Comfy Seats, IFE is Top Notch! Disadvantages: Business Class always fully booked.
...to Singapore). Aircraft: A340-400
Sri Lankan is now handled by KLM at Heathrow and although their attitude was quite indifferent at check-in, it was a totally the opposite when onboard.
After being greeted with Ayubowan (traditional Sri Lankan greeting) at the door and taking my seat, I was given hot towels before the flight took off (I've not seen this done in 'economy' on another airline). They also given menu booklets to all the passengers in ... ...spent is being used for your service and enjoyment.
The crew were amazing: friendly and warm. I had a pasta type meal for dinner which surprised me wholely as the quality and taste was amazing. It was as if I was eating a freshly cooked meal in a restaurant!
They also had sandwiches in the galleys of the aircraft which passengers could help themselves to if they felt peckish.
The seats were very comfy and there were seatback TV's in all the seats ...

...fly again is Sri Lankan Airlines.
I flew Sri Lankan Airlines from London to Malaysia in July 04. First of all we were told to reconfirm our flight but the phone lines were either continually engaged or if you did get through you were put into a queueing system for a long time.
At Heathrow there were only 3 check in counters serving the entire flight hence check in really did take 2 hours of queueing . The flight was completely full hence the cabin ... ...oil. Worse still, Sri Lankan airlines has no customer support service whatsoever. I was given a number to report the damage to and after many rings someone would just pick up the phone and leave it on the side without answering it. After a day of trying I managed to get through only to be given more phone numbers to call to report the damage. I was sent on a wild goose chase (they gave me British Airways numbers to call) and then finally BA gave ...

...to the 5* opinions of Sri Lankan Airlines. We travelled with them recently and had a variety of problems. We were due to fly from Sri Lanka to the Male in the Maldives at 0700 (and pick up a connecting sea-plane to the resort). However, the day before we were due to fly we were told that the flight had been re-arranged to 0500, so we missed most of our night's sleep.
However, that was only the start of our problems. After an early wake-up call, ... ...flights were being cancelled, including one to Australia. It seems that Sri Lankan Airlines don't have enough planes - hence my comment "always late, often cancelled". Check in staff seemed unable to sort out the problems.
Their fares appear competitive, but we found them to be unreliable. ...

Advantages: comfortable seating, excellent in flight entertainment Disadvantages: local food!!
Having travelled to Sri Lankan with Sri Lankan Airways in October this year, I was pleasantly surprised with the on board service and the actual aircraft layout itself. I travelled on a 11 hour direct flight from Heathrow to Sri Lanka and sat on an economy seat. The seat itself was very spacious, with a seat pitch of 33" and seats had adjustable head and arm rests for extra comfort. Formation of seats was 2-4-2 and allocation of seats was pre-bookable ... ...word, 4 in a row and many others. On the whole I would fully recommend Sri Lankan Airways and would fly with them again in teh future. If you are worried about a long flight, Sri LAnkan Airways makes the flight so comfortable the time really does pass quickly. ...

...before our holiday and choose Sri Lankan because they were slightly cheaper than others. A month before the holiday they cancelled one of the flights and rescheduled the remaining flights without giving us any option for a refund. The flights we were left with were horrible (9 hour layover and a long haul flight leaving at 4am) and we were forced to take extra time off work as the new flights arrived on Monday morning. We would NEVER have agreed ...

later on, and what happened during them.
I would like to say here that SriLanka is safe. You will not be mobbed by terrorists if you stick to the south, and in fact you will probably be safer in southern SriLanka than you will be in those safer parts of Ireland. So don’t tell me I’m wrong – I’m not!
Welcome to Bandranaike...
When you land, regardless of the airline you are travelling on, a stairwell painted in bright colours and with ‘SriLankan’ written down the side will greet you at the door of the aircraft. You will all disembark and a huge wake of heat and humidity will hit you.
Unfortunately, you have to get in to a bus to make the thirty-second journey to the terminal, so you will have to forget the heat for the moment. Get your passports ready! And it’s out of the SriLankanAirlines ...
Advantages: Often very cheap Disadvantages: Can be cramped but airlines such as SriLankan are very good.
in-flight meal last. Not that you were going to eat in anyway.
A Typical Economy Experience…
I am going to do two examples here, so you can actually see the difference in Economy Classes. The first example is SriLankanAirlines, which have lost three aircraft in the attack on Bandranaike Airport. Route: London – Colombo (SriLanka’s capital).
You arrive at the airport, carrying your luggage, not realising you have exceeded the limit by about two kilos. Anyway, so you and your child enter terminal four and find the SriLankanAirlines check-in desks. There’s a rather large queue. You join – at the end.
You’re standing around, looking bored. If you watched airport last night, you will have seen the friendly man who works for SriLankan. Anyway, there are one or two supervisors. They come round ...
