St Anton is an excellent base from which to explore the rest of the Tirol, with the Kaunertal Valley, Italy, Lichtenstein, Switzerland and Germany all being within and easy day excursion by car, there are many chairlifts and cable cars around St Anton and regular tain service to Bregenz and Innsbruck.
I would not recommend St Anton to those who find hilly environments difficult, I would direct you to Seefeld which is very level despite being in the thick of the mountains..
St Anton is a lively place with lots of night life loads of Hotels and Guesthouses to suit all tastes and pockets and plenty of great walks. Just got back from St Anton (New Year 2006 - 07) and what a great place to visit. Skiing: Runs are generally for the intermediate and expert skier although there are beginners runs in a few places and a very good ski school. To get to Lech and Zurs you can either get the bus from St Anton or ski to St Christoph and get it from there. If you have ... ...is at the end of St Anton High St and a little quieter. Just got back from St Anton last week and what can I say! - It's incredible. An afternoon isn't a proper afternoon without a visit to the Mooserwirt bar/restaurant about a 2 minute ski from the bottom. At about 4:30 they turn up the music and start playing cheesy dance versions of all the classic hits like Do Wah Diddy and Hey Baby. This is tho..the whole thing works. With the drinks flowing at the constant stream of music that anyone can sing-along ... ...skiing side of things st Anton has a lot to offer. There's a vast ski area which operates with a very clever lift pass. You just leave it in your pocket and it reads it as you pass through. Neat huh?! It also gives you access to the resorts of Zurs and Lech which are only a few miles away! ...

Advantages: Diversity Disadvantages: You might find Austrians a bit stand offish
Austria is a country that I have fallen in love with, ever since I was plunged headlong into a valley to be an English Teacher (although the way I describe it here, makes it sound more like a bungie jump!) Most people know very little about Austria, other than having heard of Vienna, Salzburg, and Innsbrück, and having heard of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Nikki Lauda, Sachertorte and anti-freeze in wine. That was until February 2000, when Jörg Haider's "Freedom Party" the FPÖ, became junior partners in a coalition government. Overnight the country was made into a pariah by the EU, and whilst sanctions have been removed, the threat of Haider still remains.
In the West, in the Vorarlberg, the Tirol and Salzburgerland, Austria boasts some of Europe's finest skislopes, with world class resorts, including StAnton and Saalbach-Hinterglemm, not ...

Advantages: great skiing, great ambience Disadvantages: high season - high prices - crowds
These days the skibuffs among you will watch the annual Hahnenkamm races in Kitzbühel, Austria´s prime World Cup racing event. Yes, and it´s "Kitz" (meaning kidgoat, Bühel standing for hill) which has been Austria´s pioneer skiing resort together with the Arlberg region (St.Anton, Lech and Zürs) for decades.
While I write down my memories of 38 years of skiing the world´s top slalom skiers prepare for their first run on the "Ganslern". Friday´s event was the SuperG, yesterday the famous downhill race on the "Streif" took place ? both won by Stephan Eberharter, deservedly leader in the overall standings and successor of injured legend Hermann Maier.
Back to my roots: in 1964 my family of five ? we lived some 50 km east of Vienna - took off for Kitzbühel in the Tyrolean Alps which was a day´s trip by car back then. Nowadays ...
Advantages: one of the best ski resorts in Europe Disadvantages: none that I am aware of
I know that many people from the UK like to come skiing to Austria, most of them are going to famous places like St. Anton, Lech, Zurs or Kitzbuhel. There are, however, other and less crowded places which you might want to consider as well.
This year, I have spent my skiing holidays at Schladming, a town in the Styria region, situated approx. 90 km from Salzburg and approx. 300 km from Vienna, Munich and Innsbruck.
Schladming has been voted by the Daily Mail to be Europe's best developed skiing resort. You will find a lot of information on the Internet. Have a look at www.schladming.com!
ACCOMMODATION
You will find all types of accommodation in Schladming and in various price ranges, from first-class hotels to private rooms and self-catering appartments. Prices vary depending on the type of accommodation and on the season ...
