A SUITABLE RESTING PLACE FOR St ALBAN

Advantages: Antiquity, Architecture, Free Entry, Guides, History.
Disadvantages: None Found

It was one of those rare days that we "happened upon" St Albans and it's Cathedral. Having half a day to kill whilst the car was being serviced in Chiswick, West London, although our loan car, being electrically assisted, was, for now at least, exempt from the Central London Congestion Charge, we made the positive decision to leave "The Smoke" and search out somewhere a touch less claustrophobic. THE ROMAN "CITY" OF ST ALBANS Around twenty miles to the north of London is the delightful old town of St Albans, many years ago I had enjoyed a day out here, Mrs R in her seven years in England had never had the pleasure - but was not, for whatever reason over-excited at the prospect! Asking me 'what was there to see', my first and only real answer was the Cathedral. However, having had a very early start that morning, my thoughts ...

Review of St Albans Cathedral, England

Sheffield's Other Cathedral.

Advantages: Beautifully Decorated
Disadvantages: Quite Difficult To Find

THE BACKGROUND The Church was designed by a local Architect by the name of Matthew Hadfield, but some of the magnificent stained glass windows and internal fixtures were designed by a well known member of the Gothic Revivalist Movement called Augustus Pugin. It opened on the 11th September 1850. In 1879 the building was extensively extended and became the principal Catholic Church within the Diocese of Sheffield, but it did not become a Cathedral until as recently as 1980. THE EXTERIOR The External design of the building is a typically Gothic design based on the same design as several 14th and 15th century Churches within Yorkshire and the North Midlands. Matthew Hadfield, the Architect of this Church, which is now a Grade 11 listed building is quoted as saying that his greatest inspiration for this Church was the Church of St Andrew ...

Review of Cathedral Church of St Marie

Gothic from every side

Advantages: Wonderfully full and accessible, interesting
Disadvantages: -

. There are literally thousands of such dotted across the European and European-influenced landscapes. Each building has its own unique characteristics, but they share a common spirit. Church building in particular was 'big business' in Christendom for a long time. Scott quotes estimates of that there are nearly 19,000 ecclesiastical buildings in England and Wales, nearly half of which date to the medieval period. The first Gothic church was the Abbey Church of St. Denis, just north of Paris, built under the direction of the 'founding father' of Gothic style, Abbot Suger. Scott's first major section looks at how cathedrals were built, in terms of materials, architectural design, settings, and workforce. With regard to the workforce, the numbers were large and the division of labour highly specialised. In the records of the construction ...
