Great Petersburg

Advantages: A wonderful, beautiful city with a rich history
Disadvantages: None

of St Petersburg could easily have you believing you are, in fact, still in Europe). Whether you like the church or not is very much a question of personal taste but I think, at least from the outside, it is beautiful. For a slightly pricey entrance fee of 300 roubles (£6) with 50 roubles (£1) on top for the privilege of taking photos you can step inside. I found the heavy mosaic effect interesting and unique but, at the same time, I certainly didn't like it! n.b. On our tickets for the church there are also pictures of St Isaac's Cathedral and St Sampson's Cathedral indicating, possibly, that 300 roubles gets you into all three. However our frustrating inability to read Russian meant that we didn't know for sure! The Admiralty - One of the most attractive buildings in the city the primrose coloured Admiralty building reflects St ...

A SUITABLE RESTING PLACE FOR St ALBAN

Advantages: Antiquity, Architecture, Free Entry, Guides, History.
Disadvantages: None Found

replaced by pillars of the Decorated style, the work being completed in 1345. THE DESTRUCTION OF THE ABBEY Notable on the north side pillars are the thirteenth century wall paintings, showing Jesus on the cross and scenes with Mary, his mother. Bearing in mind their sheer antiquity, these have survived the ravages of time surprisingly well. What have not, are the paintings depicting the saints on the south facing pillars. These were quite literally "de-faced" during the reformation, Sir Richard Lee, a military engineer, had been employed to destroy the monastic buildings and much of the iconic art within the abbey church itself. St Albans had been surrendered to the crown (Henry VIII) on 5th December 1539, it was, erroneously, thought that the abbey church would become an Anglican Cathedral, as had already happened at Peterborough. This ...

The Hermitage Saint Petersburg

Advantages: Big collection of (international) arts
Disadvantages: Simply too big to cover in one day

The place to visit once in Saint Petersburg! Even when you're not that much interested in arts or history, it's the place to be an feel the atmoshpere of the old Russian times. Exhibitions change from time to time and can be checked at www.hermitagemuseum.org Make sure you get a map when entering, otherwise you will get lost. Give this visit an early start when you want to get the most out of it or make a selection before. The exhibitions give an impression of the life of the old tsars, their power and wealth. The history of Saint Petersburg, his people, etc. The biggest part of the collection is arts collected by the tsars. For example, more then 50% of the work of the famous Dutch painters is shown in The Hermitage. Tickets can be purchased online to avoid the sometimes long lines for the counters. The Hermitage is open from Tuesday ...
