Advantages Beautiful lagoon location. Gorgeous rooms & restaurant. Attentive service. 5 star relaxed elegance
Disadvantages Costs more.
I have been to Knysna in South Africa on two occasions over the last few years, and I have stayed at the St. James Hotel on one occasion for 5 nights. The St. James is a 5 star hotel that is premiere hotel in Knysna and one that has really become a landmark in it's own right.
One of the major advantages and selling points of the St. James Hotel in Knysna is the near perfect location of the hotel. Not only is it set in one of the most lovely towns in South Africa, but it is also set in the most beautiful area of Knysna.
If you're traveling from the direction of Cape Town, the St. James is situated on your right hand side just as you enter Knysna. You'll see the signs for it before you see the hotel as the hotel is largely hidden from the road and unless you know where you're looking, you probably won't see it. However, you will see the gorgeous Knysna Lagoon - and the hotel sits very happily right on the shores of this most beautiful estuary. The main town is about a mile from the hotel and during the day it is walking distance, but at night I would recommend getting a taxi or driving yourself because I really wouldn't recommend walking around anywhere at night in South Africa. Taxi's are cheap and the hotel will organise one for you with no problem.
I cannot overstate the beauty of the grounds, which are largely attributed to its location on the Knysna Lagoon. The lagoon is literally on the doorstep and you have unimpeded access to the shores of the lagoon any time of the day and night. If you opt for a lake facing room (we did) then I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed by the view out across the lagoon, looking out towards the Knysna Heads. The shore areas are very clean - and there is nothing more relaxing that being sat on your patio listening to the sounds of the waves gently lapping the shore. There is a small pier style jetty that is nice to walk out onto - especially romantic in the moonlight - and which you can take small watercraft from. The St. James has a beautiful landscaped garden which complements the setting perfectly. The whole site is over 3 acres and it really is a lovely experience to wander around the grounds or sit out and have a glass of wine in the garden. There is a vegetable garden which they welcome you to have a look at and where the restaurant get their vegetables from.
