If like me you are sick and tired of over priced, over rated "All Inclusive" holidaying - which seems to be an endless cycle of staying in complexes in the middle of nowhere, in hotels with no identity which feel like they could be anywhere in the world, requiring a desire to queue at a buffet to eat day and night, only being allowed to dine in the hotels ' signature restuarant' once a week, in questionable rooms with even more questionable room service - then look no further.

The area isn't noisy or "laddish" but the the perfect venue for couples and families - with options of bars open later into the night should you require them but not in an obvious way. It has a very cosmopolitan feel. It has 'life' but isn't 'too lively'.
The locals are friendly and although they will chat and sometimes attempt to sell you things - a polite 'no thanks' is all it takes - unlike some other Carribean islands we have visited.
The Gap is also a great place from which to see the rest of the island. The restaurants on the West Coast provide a fix for those foodies among you - The Cliff, Carambola, Champers, Mullins Bay, lunch at Sandy Lane are all first class experiences not to be missed and all are a short taxi ride or drive in a hired mini moke (which absolutely has to be done!)
Advantages: Great base Disadvantages: None - this is Barbados...
St Lawrence Gap is a very lively part of Barbados, often referred to merely as "The Gap", with places like The Ship Inn (Thursday night), the Reggae Lounge (Sunday nights) and plenty of others to amuse you, offering either free admission or a cover charge but reduced priced drinks. St Lawrence Gap is not far from Rockley Beach for water sports, and of course, being on the coast, you can swim in the sea, which is warm all year round (usually a lot ... ...plethora of beggars and hawkers, St Lawrence Gap is ideal. A taxi to St Lawrence Gap from Bridgetown is usually around $BD40 and a similar price to the Grantley Adams International Airport. I recommend trying the Roti - like Fajitas, and washing everything down with bottles of Banks Beer, or trying the chicken from Wendy's Burger stand outside the Ship Inn. We were based there for a cricket tour and had an amazing two and a half weeks. There is also ...

Advantages: Great Location Disadvantages: Can be noisy
I visited the 'South Gap Hotel' from the 5th June -12th June 2006 on a holiday with my partner, the accomodation was booked via the hotel's website in advance.

From the airport it is a 15 minute taxi ride costing 25-35BDS (Barbados Dollars) about £8.

Advantages: Great night life, good taxi service Disadvantages:
Bridgetown has still got a colonial air about it, around Bridge Street and it is a very prosperous place, with vestiges of the empire with The Royal Barbados Yacht Club and similar bastions of the Empire. As well as the Kensington Oval, one of the World's greatest Test Match Cricket Grounds, there is a race course at Garrison Savannah, and a wide range of shops, with many tax free jewelers. In addition to this Bridgetown is home to many of Barbados' hottest nightspots including The Boatyard and the legendary Harbour Lights. Taxis run all through the night with a cab to StLawrence Gap costing between $B25 and $45 depending on the time of night. Bridgetown does however also have a rougher side to it, and there are some problems with drugs and violence, although not generally in the city, and as such it is still safe for tourists. As such ...
Advantages: Great location opposite a lovely beach. Good service and comfort Disadvantages: Not a luxurious hotel, and not very modern
Time Out at the Gap is a nice hotel, comfortable, even if not very modern. The swimming pool is nice and clean, good size when not too busy (we went out of seson, in mid-november), it might get crowded during the season. The rooms are clean, but would need refurbishment: updating bathrooms and repainting would be good).
The staff is not always very friendly, which is a shame, as locals are usually very friendly.
I would definitely recommend this hotel, if you don't have a big budget, it is good value for money.
The location is great in StLawrence Gap, the tourist area of Barbados, with bars, and pubs and lots of retaurants within a walking distance to choose from.
The hotel can book excursions for you, or reserve a cab. They also give out beach towels. All rooms are air-conditionned. Ask for a room with balcony (good size ...
