It was one of those rare days that we "happened upon" St Albans and it's Cathedral. Having half a day to kill whilst the car was being serviced in Chiswick, West London, although our loan car, being electrically assisted, was, for now at least, exempt from the Central London Congestion Charge, we made the positive decision to leave "The Smoke" and search out somewhere a touch less claustrophobic.

Advantages: beautiful, insightful Disadvantages: can be depressing
In October of 07 I went on a day trip to Ypres, Belgium. I was with my schools GCSE History class, as we had been studying The Home Front. So we had the option of taking a trip to Belgium.
I have to say going to Ypres was one of the best experience of my life. It is absolutely beautiful their, it is vintage and very town-like. Going in October meant it was absolutely freezing but that did not effect my feelings on the day.
We got to Ypres by coach from taking the euro tunnel and driving through France. I have to say being an experienced coach traveller (having been on 12 hour coach journeys) that was the shortest coach ride i have ever taken. It felt like 2 hours.
So our first stop in Ypres was to go to The Menin Gate. This gate is absolutely amazing, with names upon names of deceased soldiers in the war of any nationality ...

Advantages: Beautifully Decorated Disadvantages: Quite Difficult To Find
I am not a religious person and never have been but the sudden death of my partner recently made me pay a visit to the Church of St. Marie's in the centre of Sheffield.
The Church of St Marie's is the Catholic Cathedral within the city, and one of two Cathedrals within Sheffield, the other being the nearby Anglican Cathedral.
I did not visit this place for religious purposes, but to simply light a candle for my loved one. My partner, though Roman Catholic by Religion was not by any means a practising Catholic, and if truth be known he had struggled in the past with some of the aspects of his faith, including his Sexuality, but it had been a place where he had found some solace during a few low moments of his life over the years.
