Advantages: Away from the Tourist Hoards of St Marks. Disadvantages: None
Just returned from our annual anniversery trip to Venice and noticed that no-one has done a review on this church as yet.
Just Jump on Vaperreto Number 2 outside St Marks.
As you stand by the water at St Marks you can not but notice a large Church on the opposite side of the Canal which is the Church of SantaMaria Della Salute, I am afraid I did not take any photos this year as the main dome is covered in scaffolding, in fact there seemed to be more buildings this year that were being worked on.
This is not a critism of Venice, by its nature restortaion work is a necessity.
It was on 22 October 1630 that the Senate of Venice decided to build a Church to Honour the Madonna to mark the end of the Plague which had devestated Venice.
So the first stone was laid on April 1st 1631, what a change from here where it seems to take ...
Advantages: Perfect example of a great championship stadium with a great level of football! Disadvantages: Can get busy in eating area at half time
I am not personally a Southampton fan (and nor am I a Portsmouth fan), I actually support Southend United, but I recently moved down to this area and many of my friends support Southampton. Last Friday I was asked by my fiend, who is an avid Saints fan if I wanted to go with him to watch them play at home in a friendly against Celtic and so I said yes.
It was a great match and despite Celtic winning 2-0 the atmosphere was great and I really enjoyed myself.
I have now visited many different stadiums in my time from very small league 2 team grounds, some with standing sections and the great Nou Camp which I recently reviewed. However, I was pleasantly surprised by StMarys - the home ground for Southampton FC and really enjoyed my visit there.
Here are some facts:
Name: StMary's Stadium
Inauguration: 11 August 2001
First match ...
Advantages: Lots of history, free to visit Disadvantages: None for me
I would hazard a guess that StMary's is probably the most common church name in England. Where I live in Sheffield there is a large parish church on the fringe of the city centre called StMary's and within a 5 mile radius of my house there are at least two other churches that bear that same name. About a decade ago I lived in a 16th century cottage under the shadow of another StMary's in Chesterfield which is more commonly known as The Crooked Spire, but the StMary's Church that I now see from my window is the one at Hansdworth. If you mention StMary's Church round here it can certainly be confusing exactly which church you are actually talking about.
Historically Handsworth was a small hamlet, which is mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1089 although nowadays it has been absorbed into the sprawling suburbs of the city of Sheffield ...
