I am not personally a Southampton fan (and nor am I a Portsmouth fan), I actually support Southend United, but I recently moved down to this area and many of my friends support Southampton. Last Friday I was asked by my fiend, who is an avid Saints fan if I wanted to go with him to watch them play at home in a friendly against Celtic and so I said yes.
It was a great match and despite Celtic winning 2-0 the atmosphere was great and I really enjoyed myself.

I have now visited many different stadiums in my time from very small league 2 team grounds, some with standing sections and the great Nou Camp which I recently reviewed. However, I was pleasantly surprised by St Marys - the home ground for Southampton FC and really enjoyed my visit there.

Here are some facts:

Name: St Mary's Stadium
Inauguration: 11 August 2001
First match: Southampton-Espanyol 3-4
Costs: £32 million
Capacity: 32,800 seats
Press seats: 84
Address: Britannia Road, Southampton, Hants. SO14 5FP

The stadium has a 4 star Uefa rating and has a capacity of over 32,000. It was quite large but was still well filled and this created a great atmosphere. The stadium also felt very modern with clean seats and the whole eating and entrance area felt rather nice. It also looked quite attractive from a distance. The only problem when you see it from a distance is that it is located next to a load of warehouses and factories and is rather unpleasant.

Of course it has a variety of different bars and snack areas and all have what you would ever need for a footie match - beer and burgers! Although the prices are rather high so it would be worthwhile taking your won stuff to save money.
Security is also very high with all bags being checked before entering the stadium - no cans are allowed as these can be hurled onto the pitch and potentially cause damage.
Tickets for matches vary dependent upon what type of match and where you sit, for example for the friendly i attended tickets were only £10. But on normal match days they would be between £20 and £30. You can also purchase a programme which cost around £3 on normal match days and slightly more for special matches - such as testimonials.

There is also a large club shop where you can purchase Southampton shirts and other merchandise from here!

The match i watched was great with a very high quality of players and level and everyone seemed to put every bit of effort in making it very exciting with so many chances and great saves - despite it being 2-0 it was a very evenly matched game! There was also a lot of stuff going on at half time with a special 5 a side match featuring ex players including Matt Le Tissier - who also alter played in the last 10 minutes of the actual game! - he used to be an awesome player and showed he still has it!
I really enjoyed myself and felt the atmosphere was electric with everyone up and singing and cheering at every chance or tearing their hair out when there was a near miss.

A point of warning - if you want to get a drink or something a t half time it would be advised to leave your seat a few minutes before the whistle in order of any chance of getting something as it gets so busy in there at half time!

This is a great stadium and really makes the Championship seem like a great league with some great, welcoming stadiums and a very high level of football!
If you ever get a chance then maybe you should go watch Southampton play at their home ground St Mary's!

My husband watched this game in our packed local. He said that Celtic had a huge support there and that the atmosphere was good for a friendly. Of course, he was delighted with the scoreline ;-) Good review, Caroline xx

First Southampton - review by TYoung

Advantages: Buses go to all parts of Southampton. New buses provide comfort for all passengers, also good disabled facilities available. Free service from Train Station to the West Quay Shopping Centre.
Disadvantages: The old buses are basically awful, needs to get rid of them and bring in newer buses. Needs to win back old bus users and introduce Student schemes.
