Firstly I want to put an end to a common misconception - you do not need to be a youth to stay in a youth hostel. However though, you do need to be a member. There are three types of membership - single, family or group. A single membership costs £13 per year for over eighteens, £6.50 per year for under eighteens or there is a life time membership for £190. A family membership costs either £13 per year for one parent and any children under 18 or £26 for two parents and any children under 18. A group membership costs £13 and is for schools, businesses and any other bona fide organisations with a minimum of 5 members for the UK and 9 members for foreign youth hostels.
I have never been to a youth hostel before in my life but I can say this one was great. It far surpassed my expectations and was even better than some hotels that I have previously stayed in.
Firstly this
hostel is very conveniently located within 5 minutes walking distance of three London train stations (Kings Cross, Euston and St. Pancras). Kings Cross and Euston are also on the Victoria Tube Line and one or two stops from the Circular line.
Anyway I travelled there with a group of four female college friends. We had two rooms of four with me being in a room all alone and the four females sharing. Sadly my room was not en suite but the other room was. However my bathroom was right outside my room and was shared with only one other room sharing so it wasn't too bad. Both rooms had two sets of bunk beds with sheets and quilts supplied, a table, three chairs (a bit bizarre in a room for four), hanging space, coat hangers, a mirror, and lockable cupboards but only with a padlock which you need to supply. They also have thick curtains, double glazing and a heating/air conditioning unit.
The price was very good for London. It cost £20 per person for the under eighteens and £24 per person for the over eighteens. The price included breakfast which we thought would have been continental but it turned out to be full English or cereals. You have to consider that elsewhere in London a full English costs about £5.
The rooms are on floors 2 to 6 but do not worry there are two lifts. Or for you fitness freaks there are the stairs - not recommended if you are on the sixth floor. They have a variety of different sized rooms from 2 persons to six persons but there are more of some than others if you get what I mean.
The hostel itself is very secure. To actually get in you have to press a buzzer and wait for someone to get in. And also there is the fact you have to be a member to stay there so that helps also.
On the first floor there is a cafe/restaurant where you can get breakfast or an evening meal. The breakfasts are good but the evening meals are always a set meal and they do not always look that good. Failing the restaurant there are plenty of shops nearby and a self catering kitchen in the basement. Also if you do not cook there are plenty of food places like McDonalds and Burger King just down the road and many other food places are situated inside Kings Cross station.
Other amenities in the hostel is a luggage store in the basement so you can store your luggage on the day you check out if you are not leaving the area until that evening. This is open 7am until 10pm and a small locker costs £1 and a large locker costs £2. There is also a laundrette in the basement but I do not know the prices as we didn't have to use them.
On the ground floor there is a lounge area with a TV, some arcade games, a giant connect four game and some vending machines. There are also a couple of computers for using the internet.
At reception there are many things for sale which are essential for many hostel goers. If you are sharing a room don't forget the padlocks for the lockable cupboards which are for sale in reception if you do forget them.
If you need to find this place you cannot miss it as it is directly opposite The British Library on Euston Road.
Another useful piece of information is that it is sandwiched directly between two public houses.

Advantages: Great accommodation...really clean, with the required facilities Disadvantages: Had quite a lot of difficulty with the lockers for luggage.
