I was single sitting in a travel agents dreaming of the hermitage gallary and the mariinsky theatre and the white nights - 24 hrs of undisturbed sunlight and the food and the beer and well lets face it going to russia is a fairly cool thing to do. huh? "HOW MUCH" i said, to which the travel agent smiled behind her heavaly made up face and brought over a broucher for butlins spring breaks at £70 a time!! This was most certainly not the way i dreamed of spending my first solo trip abroad. So i searched the internet and found out about TEFL courses. Where you get to teach english as a foriegn language to russian students. you get pocket money and free accomodation. sorted this was it. I found a school with classrooms on the bank of the Neva sitting in the shadows of the Hermitage or Winter Palace as it was called under the reign of the romanovs. My first day was very hard, it was almost like your first day at school. In fact it was my first day at school - The Benedict International School Russia. The weather was cold to say the least. the cold air was biting at my nose but nothing could dampen the splendour of this fantastic city. geographically St Petersburg is situated at the extreme east of the gulf of finland and is a series of islands not unlike Venice - in fact many tourists refer to it as the venice of the north. The majority of buildings in the city centre are very grand and each and every one has its own secrets. the river was frozen solid all it appeared good for was the odd ice hole fisher or as was being demonstrated by a bunch of soilders close to a bridge by the wonderful peters and pauls fortress, a game of football. I hope they dont fall in i though then realised that there was not much chance of this happening, the locals know when the ice is unsafe and stay well clear but for now the snow covered ice provided pedestirans the ideal short cut to cross the river. suffice to say my trip continued in this good but cold vein - you do need to ensure that you are able to handel the very good but confusing public transport system in order to go to such gems as the peterhoff a series of palaces situated accross the gulf on an island with perfectly manicured gardens with gold plated stautes galore. a russian speaking guide would be a great way to ensure you get most out of your trip.
A nice outline of the place - never been there!! Would be better though to include more information about how it was, what your favourite places were, the price, the ease of moving around, the people etc. If you need some more help, it would be a pleasure to try and be there - just drop a line in my guest book and I'll write back. Beautiful experience though - nice review. xx

Have to agree about paragraphing - sorry - but a tempting review of St. Petersburg nevertheless. The teaching sounds interesting - do tell us more, how did you find the experience? Have you taught before and how much experience was required? Ice skating - sounds heavenly.

Hope you add to this one. Not been to St Petersburg yet, although going to Riga for the weekend tomorrow - will hopefully whet my appetite to get to St Petersburg! Mike

Advantages: so much to see and do, fabulous architecture, the Hermitage, boat tours round the city Disadvantages: need to purify your water - apart from that, NONE!
