Step back in time at the Staircase House

Advantages: great audio guide, interactive
Disadvantages: taircase on first glance bit of a letdown, may not be good for repeat visiits

When you think of historic English towns and cities you think instantly of places such as York, Chester and Bath. Stockport does not come to mind at all. Surely its just an industrial town near Manchester? Well no. It may not be in the same league as the other places mentioned but it does have a few historic gems that make it worth visiting such as the Tudor Bramhall, Hall, the Victorian market, the picturesque Chadkirk Chapel and their newest heritage ...
...thinking “Not another historic house with period rooms” . You may be right to an extent. However I feel the Staircase House has a couple of unique aspects that differentiates itself from other house type museums. The Staircase House was originally built as a merchant;s townhouse house dating from the seventeenth century. This is fairly unique as most of the historic houses have visited from this period have been country manors and halls. The townhouses ... more

Aberdeen Maritime Museum

Advantages: Excellent museum, my kids love to go every time we visit Aberdeen
Disadvantages: Perhaps not easy to find as it is off the main streets.

Aberdeen Maritime Museum is located in Ship Row, close to the harbour in a historic area of the city. The importance of the fishing industry in this part of the country is explored along with the oil industry and local shipbuilding. There are loads of interactive exhibits which kids will enjoy and the large oil platform model which stretches over three levels is amazing to see. There are fantastic views out over the harbour area from the top floor of the museum too. The older part of the building - Provost Ross's house is very interesting with it's low ceilings and winding staircases. It houses lots of memorabilia from things like the ferry services and lifeboats. The museum has a small gift shop selling all kinds of sea related gifts, books and toys. The Leading Lights cafe in the basement area serves lovely coffee and cakes ...

Indian Joy Riding Without Getting Arrested

Advantages: An Amazing Little Railway
Disadvantages: Darjeeling to Ghoom was enough for me

-capped mountain and what was cloud. The break at Basia was about 20 minutes, rather than the initially promised 10 minutes. Another 10 minutes of day-light slipped away. On to Gloomy Ghoom Back on the train and we puffed along at a walking pace before arriving at the end point of the Joy Ride line, Ghoom Station. Accounts vary about whether this is the world's highest railway station or the second highest but either way, it's not too important to be precise. We had about a half hour break at Ghoom which was probably more than it really needed on a grey drizzly afternoon in the fading light. The old station building is in poor condition but houses a quite interesting exhibition about the history of the DHR and the UNESCO plans for improvement. This exhibition was reached up a rickety iron staircase and the museum had one of the most unstable ...

A RIGHT ROYAL RIP-OFF!

Advantages: It's BIG! St George's Chapel.
Disadvantages: You'll have to read the review and see..........

a room to one side of the gallery. It is a splendid model house of 1/12th scale designed by famous architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and presented to Queen Mary in 1924. Every detail is authentic; it has electric lighting and a fully operational plumbing system. The tiny bottles of wine and Champaign are just that - the real thing! Between the Dolls House room and the entrance to the State Apartments via the grand stair case is situated The Gallery. Quite the gloomiest art gallery I think that I have seen, it is situated in a large vaulted undercroft and houses a large collection of photographs and drawings from the Royal Collections. Before climbing the (very) Grand Staircase you have to pass through the China Museum. Here is housed a huge collection, behind glass naturally, of china services from famous English and European manufacturers ...
