Last year I was asked to sort a block booking for a political conference on a very tight budget. Finding a hotel in Manchester for less than £70 a night proved an almost impossible task. Even the pubs charged more. The only option was the Stay Inn, on the northern edge of the city centre. I was not expecting much as I'd read some pretty begative reviews on the internet but as it turned out they were both unfair and inaccurate. Let's deal with the negatives first. The hotel's location, a good 15 minute walk from Deansgate, means you have to be fairly fit and able-bodied to take advantage of its proximity to town. After dark, you'll probably need a tax which is £5 or so from Albert Square. The area is not exactly posh but the goood news is it is rapidly getting better as a result of the new housing developments all around. Foodwise, it's basic. Breakfast is not included in the price but it's relatively cheap ( about a fiver) and the bar is extremely reasonable and stays open late. Rooms are functional but clean and mine had a view over the Manchester skyline. If you have a family, there are family rooms which render the cost ( around £50 a night) even cheaper. The staff are friendly and helpful and, in our four-day stay there, we had no complaints. So if you're looking for somewhere to stay in Manchester, and can't afford the fancy stuff, Stay Inn is a good budget option.
