Decent value for money, the wines will be the most expensive thing you'll get there. Worth a trip if garlic's your thing.

what I mean, but eating clam chowder out of a scooped-out sourdough roll is fun - it's the equivalent of Soup In A Basket (Leak Soup?). Try the StinkingRose restaurant for garlic-lovers, yes even the ice cream has it.
Once fed and watered take the coastal route south - go to Carmel, where Clint was mayor, or try Monterey's Cannery Row - if you can't get lodgings hereabouts, nearby Salinas is a few miles inland with an interesting farmer's market and murder rate.
San Luis Obispo is a pleasant spot, once voted America's favourite small town, and the first to ban smoking in public.
Then comes what everyone's been waiting for, CA Highway 1, that unique coastal route that features in so many films. Driving south puts you near the edge, with a better view of the coastline - a small point but worth making.

Mediterranean restaurants, even in Spain, some of the cooked vegetables appear to be of the canned variety. God knows why when they are surrounded by so many great raw materials. I suppose here in England at least they've got an excuse especially in winter.
Fish dishes are also available, and my wife had a terrific grilled salmon there to. Bacalao a la Viscaina (Basque-style Cod) is also delicious.
Seafood is also taken care of, with the likes of prawns, octopus, squid, cuttle-fish, and mussels.
Of course, if you're not a great lover of "the stinkingrose", as the Romans used to call garlic, then grilled meats are probably your best bet, with lamb chops and a variety of steaks to choose from.

Not my forte I'm afraid, but they do look nice. If pressed, I'll have their version of Crème Caramel, (simply known as "Flan" is ...

Pizza and pasta restaurants flourish in North Beach and for garlic lovers the infamous StinkingRose restaurant can be found there, along side the traditional style cafes and bakeries. Not only are the eateries very appealing, but you will find a number of fashion boutiques and bars too. Caution should be taken in chosing which bars you enter as some are a little seedy.
