Wi not trei a holiday in Sweden this yer?

Advantages: Lots of lovely museums, pretty trees, beautiful islands and buildings
Disadvantages: Expense of food and alcohol

...from a week-long holiday in Stockholm (which provided me with a lovely excuse to ignore my University reading list for a while) and will now give you the chance to share and enjoy…

I visited Stockholm with my mum. We didn’t know much about Sweden to start with, or have many opportunities to look stuff up before going, but had a variety of reasons for wanting to go. I, being about to start a Classics degree, wanted to go somewhere I ...
...in the Royal Armoury in Stockholm until January, which I was keen to see. There’s also the opening credits to Monty Python and the Holy Grail… So Stockholm was decided upon, and my mother duly booked us flights and a hotel. I was away on a Summer School at the time, so I can’t comment on the ease with which she did this or the exact prices of our flights etc, but I do know she went neither for the ultra-cheap options nor for anything very fancy, ... more

Perfect Week-end Break

Advantages: Pretty, good food, walkable, Ice Bar
Disadvantages: A litle pricey

I went to Stockholm in the last weekend of January 2005, here are my thoughts. We arrived at the main Arlanda airport which is modern, clean and eerily quiet and sailed through passport control. Within 15 minutes of landing we'd picked up our bags and were waiting for the Arlanda express into the city. At £15, this train is pricey but it's about the same as the Heathrow express. You can take a bus at half the price and twice the time or take a taxi ...
...50% of shops in Stockholm are designer homeware places, then the other 50% are cafes. And in Gamla Stan, that's got to be more like 80%. The best one we found was the Konditorai that is reputedly the oldest in the city and is found in the little square at the bottom of Vasterlanggattan. We had a Lax (Salmon) Bagel and tea from a big Samovar in the middle of the room. Chandeliers and paintings of long dead Swedish Kings & Queens adorn the room. We ...

Venice of the North - only it's not sinking

Advantages: Cant fit into 15 words
Disadvantages: Not the easiest city to get to with Budget airlines

...the places I've been to, Stockholm is the nicest yet. Everything looks beautiful. Even the Grafitti has a nice edge to it (i dunno how!) I flew to Stockholm with Ryanair. Ryanair must like Stockholm because there are two airports tochoose from. Vasteras to the west ar Skvasta to the south. We flew to Vasteras. The airport is nice, small (like all the ryanair ones) but modern and nicer than hectic London ones or other major international airports. ...
...that the train journey to Stockholm is very cheap and very stunning. You glide through forests and over lakes in the modern sleek trains. Well worth flying out to Vasteras. Swedish trains are amazing. The train was schedules to arrive at 12:53, and we arrived at Stockholm at 12:53. Stunning compared to the UK. This was not a one off either. That same week, my friend went from Oslo to Stcokholm by train, and it arrived at exactly the right time. How ...

No ice bears, folk-costumes or clogs ?

Advantages: City with nature and water nearby
Disadvantages: Expensive

...raised in a suburb to Stockholm but now I live in Gothenburg. This is my to-do’s and not to-do’s on Stockholm. So, we do not have ice bears walking down the street. We don’t dance around in folk-costumes, tap-dancing with clogs. We’re not all blond and blue-eyed. In fact, Stockholm has grown up into any western world city at all. We have big shopping streets, Mc Donald’s in every corner, museums and suburb after suburb. So, there’s much to see - ...
...in the actual city of Stockholm just catch the tube and go to “Centralen”. All tube-lines pass here so you cannot miss it. Make sure to follow signs towards “Sergels torg” or you will end up at our domestic train-station (nothing wrong with that, but it isn’t where you were going). You will come up from the underground and be standing next to the place that Swedes thinks of Stockholm the most, “SERGELS TORG”. Sergels torg isn’t really anything special ...

Watch that Wine

Advantages: Lots to do, very clean.
Disadvantages: None.

Stockholm – Venice of the North. Hang on I thought that was Bruges, no Amsterdam? How many are there? Whatever it is, it’s great. I’ve recently returned from Stockholm after a very enjoyable three-night break. All right, so it’s freezing outside. Wear a scarf, hat, gloves and a warm coat and you’re over that problem. Alternatively keep popping into the numerous coffee-houses that abound throughout the whole city and ...
...didn’t use public transport. However, Stockholm seems to have a very complete transport system. It has a tube system, buses, trams, boats and taxis. The only time we did use the train was when we caught the dedicated train from the airport to the centre. 20 minutes each way, directly from under the airport, £20 return. What a great service. A longer trip than Heathrow to Paddington yet cheaper, and people think Stockholm is expensive!! (Quick ...

Shopping in Stockholm

Advantages: lots on offer
Disadvantages: on the expensive side

...a person who goes to Stockholm to go shopping, but that does not mean that it is a boring place to shop. Quite on the contrary. Even though Stockholm is Sweden’s capital, shopping is not a particularly rushed experience and it is easy to ignore all the Stockholmers rushing around the way people tend to do in bigger cities. If in the town centre, the main shopping streets are Hamngatan and Drottninggatan. This area is where you can find the ...

If you like Swedish music (Wannadies, Cardigans, ABBA, Roxette, Neneh Cherry etc) you could easily find records not available or rare abroad. Cheap cruise fun

Advantages: cheap and chearful
Disadvantages: not for finding peace and quiet

Viking line cruises go between Helsinki and Turku (finland ) and Stockholm (sweden). I use the cruises as a cheap means to visit my friend in stockholm, I live in helsinki and flights anywhere from helsinki are expensive. The journey takes 16 hours, but dont worry because there is plenty to keep you busy on the boat. There are various accomodations, if you travel in a seat which reclines you really can get a bargin with prices for a return trip varying from 4 to 10 english pounds. If you are a real party goer and dont intend on sleeping much anyway this is a good option. All of the cabins have own facilities, the cheapes cabins are under the car deck and classed a C, these sleep 4 people in two bunk beds and have own bathroom (as do all the cabins). When i have stayed in a C cabin the price has varied based on season from 20 to 40 ...

A leisurely walk to the city (and topless Swedish blondes)

Advantages: Excellent location, good facilities, nice bar
Disadvantages: Could get a windowless room

?Learys Sportsbar, which I didn?t go to, but I am familiar with the chain and the spicy chicken wings are famous across the city. OTHER FACILITIES I didn?t use any of these, but they apparently also offer concierge, conference facilities, currency exchange, dry cleaning, fitness studio, garage, indoor pool, laundry service, limousine service, massage, room service, sauna and spa. CONCLUSION Overall, this was a very amenable hotel. The location is excellent, even taking into account my personal nostalgic angle. The facilities are reasonable and the room acceptable. This seems a decent recommendation for a hotel fairly close to the centre of town. Unfortunately (for you, anyway) I can?t comment on the price as this was a company rate. Smart, stylish, perfectly delicious stay!

Advantages: great views, excellent breakfast, clean friendly top class hotel, great location
Disadvantages: Can be a little busy, if that's really that bad!

The Clarion Hotel in Stockholm, Sweden is one of the largest in the city. Situated on Södermalm (the South Island) it's in a busy, trendy location just around the corner from all manner of bars and restaurants, and is literally across the road from Skanstull tube station which will take you to the central station and the city centre in around fifteen minutes. It's very easy to find, signposted from the station, and illuminated from the outside by fetching red and blue lights of an evening. It's a four star hotel, and prices are according. Prices vary considerably depending on the season and the days (nights) you wish to stay, so it's worth checking different dates if you can be flexible - you can pick up quite a bargain! Of the price ranges through the week we stayed there we averaged 1000 - 1500 SEK a night (approx. £70 - £110 ...
