Training on stoney ground

Advantages: Great training facility
Disadvantages: Does get crowded with poor visibility in the summer.

...chances are the former quarry Stoney Cove is the place they will find themselves once they have graduated from the warm and safe waters of their local swimming pool.

This is the place where you start your sheltered water training and is the stepping stone towards the day when the water starts to taste different, there are lots of big fish to see and you find out whether you will be a victim of sea sickness and spend your first few ...
...the small Leicestershire village of Stoney Stanton at weekends it's three car parks are filled with a wide range of accents from the north and south with many people choosing to visit for the weekend and stay locally in some of the nearby guest houses or camp sites.

Being a resident of Northampton it is ideal for my fellow Dark Island Divers and me to hop up the M1 for a days diving and be safely home for tea.

Family Friendly

No.1, Probably......

Advantages: everything new and old divers could want
Disadvantages: very crowded at weekends and a little expensive

Stoney Cove has got to be the best inland dive site in the UK. It has everything you could want and more besides. There is even a pub you can have a drink in after you have swam through the footings of!? Although it is in the middle of no-where you can still get to it quite easily from the motorway (think it's the M69, but don't quote me on that) and it even has it's own chamber should you get into any real trouble. Mind you it is only a single chamber ...
...have been several deaths at Stoney Cove over the years, mainly due to poor training and huge numbers of divers that visit the site. Mind you if the later is true then why is it so expensive to dive there? £8 to get into a crowded hole in the ground seems a little excesive, but judging by the number of people there on a weekend, I must be in the minority. Excellent all round dive site. ...

The best Inland dive site I have been to

Advantages: Good depth, variety of life and things to see
Disadvantages: Parking can be difficult and it gets very busy. the cost is also quite high.

Stoney cove is located just outside Leicester. It is one of the most popular sites in the UK which explains why it is so busy. Unless you arrive very early, it can be a long walk from the carpark to the water. This is really bad at the weekends. Although the parking is not very good and you may have to walk for a few minutes to get to the water, all the other facilities are excellent. The facilities include a dive shop, air refills, toilets, a dive ...
...popularity of the site, there can be a long wait for air refills. The quarry has a variety of depths ranging from 7 metres to 35 metres so it is perfect for the novice as well as the experienced diver. The site provides a safe environment for the novice to dive deeper and build their confidence. To relieve boredom, a variety of objects have been sunk into the water. These include boats, a helicopter, a plane and a variety of other things to explore. ...

must be the best inland UK dive site

Advantages: To many to mention
Disadvantages: Gets very busy at weekends

Stoney Cove in Leicestershire must be one of the best UK dive sites. The vis is 90% of the time very good. There are lots of interesting things to see such as a Ship, Helicopter, planes, under water rooms etc. If you go on a week day you can normally park at the waters edge although weekends you will have to get there at "stupid O clock in the morning" to get water side, so weekenders expect a fair walk to the water. There are very good facilities ...

Going down on Dorothy

Advantages: Great underwater scenery
Disadvantages: Cold and isolated

When a Force 8 wind last week wiped out our planned days diving out of Littlehampton on the south coast we were faced with an all too familiar choice for UK divers. With a day off work already booked do you go to an alternative inland site or stay in the pub all day. The consensus was to go to an inland dive site however no one particularly wanted to go to our usual site Stoney Cove so after a bit of debate it was decided to go to Dorothea Quarry which was my own preference as I had heard so much about the site but never had the pleasure of diving it. A Brief Diving History Located in the Snowdonia National Park, Dorothea (Dorrie for the rest of the review) is a former slate quarry which is in private ownership. It has long been a popular dive site for UK divers as it offers a sheltered location and large variations in depth ...
