The Clockwork Orange...

Advantages: Gets you around Glasgow, quick, regular service
Disadvantages: Quite expensive...

The Glasgow Underground is the underground train system which takes you around Central & the West of Glasgow. It is called the Subway by just about everyone and this idea that it is known as The Clockwork Orange is complete rubbish! Nobody in Glasgow calls it that! So, here are the ins and outs of the subway!

'''History'''

The Glasgow Underground was opened in 1896 making it the third oldest subway after London ...
...a 10 year period starting in 1923. It was then closed for 3 years from 1977 as it was modernised. I couldn't imagined living without the subway for 3 years! So 113 years later, it still stands!

'''The route'''

The subway is basically two rings, the inner circle (which goes in an anti-clockwise direction around the ring) and the outer circle (which is clockwise). There are 15 stops which are split down the middle ... more

Clockwork Orange!

Advantages: Cheap, Reliable, Fast, Regular
Disadvantages: Its only a 10 km circle with 15 stations!

The 3rd oldest subway in the world, Glasgow's underground is affectionately known as the Clockwork Orange. I wont go into a history lesson, but www.spt.co.uk is a useful source of information if you want to know about the Subway, past and present. There is also a good exhibition detailing the history of the Subway at the Glasgow Museum of Transport. What you need to appreciate is that this is a circular 10.4km line. It comprises of an inner and ...
...north side of th River Clyde, 7 on the Southside of the river. A journey around the whole circle would take 24 minutes. To show how they interconnect with other forms of public transport - Buchannan Street Station on the North side interchanges with Queen Street Railway Station, which gives connections to the North of Scotland, Edinburgh and certain Low Level SPT Trains, Govan interchanges with a main Bus Station, and Partick interchanges with trains ...

If you fit in, then you're fine

Advantages: Fast, Convenient, Not too expensive
Disadvantages: Squashed carriages at peak times, low ceiling height

I've been using the subway since I was about five: I am the public transport sort of person, and in Glasgow the subway seems the best thing around for me. The only problems are how small the network is, and the size of the carriages. ==Network and Connections== Something the subway is famous for is its simplicity: it forms one ring with 15 stops. There are connections directly to trains at Partick and Buchanan street, which is very convenient in ...
...Central, meaning you have to walk from St. Enoch to Central, taking you 5 to 10 minutes. (But then again, walking is good for you.) There is usually a bus stop right outside the station which can also be convenient. The stops are generally well located, for example there is a stop right outside the Buchanan Galleries, and one right in the middle of the West End. For football fans (of one certain team) you can go straight to Ibrox. This fact isn't ...

Works like clockwork, but is NOT Clockwork Orange!

Advantages: easy to use, cheap
Disadvantages: none known!

Just to say that it is NOT known as 'the clockwork orange' - if you say this term to locals, you will get blank looks..! It was the invention of a journalist, but it has never caught on - except in articles by other journalists who repeat it endlessly, having copied it - lazily - from the articles they've dug out for research. I used to travel on it every day to school, I still use it, and it's called either 'the subway' or 'the underground'. It's ...
...well-placed, the trains are frequent, fast, and tend to be reliable, the fare system is simple - you buy either a single ticket or a return, no matter which station you're going to - and it's cheap. There's also something special about travelling underground, and it's better for people-watching than either trains or buses! I'd recommend it to any visitor to Glasgow. ...
