Fly away from Stuttgart
Review of Stuttgart Echterdingen (STR) by StereoMike1983

Advantages: Well run German Airport
Disadvantages: Display screens not updated quickly enough

Stuttgart Echterdingen is situated approximately 10 miles outside of the centre of Stuttgart and is the first and last point of call for many travellers visiting this city of industry. Although not the largest of airports, Stuttgart still sees approximately 400 landings and taking offs daily and last year saw nearly 9.5million people use the airport, flying on approximately 60 different carriers. THE TERMINAL If you are flying from Stuttgart, ...
...the predominantly departures and as Stuttgart is a hub for both Germanwings and Hapag-Lloyd Express, there are a lot of check in desks for these companies. Make sure that you know where you are going because although HLX appear to have all check ins at the same point, Germanwings international and regional flights are at different points. The fourth level is full of travel agents etc and the fifth is a viewing platform (more below). ARRIVALS/DEPARTURES ... Read review

Central Station - Hidden Gem
Review of Hauptbahnhof Central Station, Stuttgart by StereoMike1983

Advantages: Great views of City, Quiet, Interesting learning centre
Disadvantages: Closes at the hint of wind

The Hauptbahnhof Central station is one of the busiest places in Stuttgart but it also remains one of Stuttgart's best kept secrets. As well as the bustling station below, it is possible to climb the tower, topped with the world famous Mercedes star, and look out over the city centre of Stuttgart. Although nowhere near as high as the TV tower outside the city, the station tower gives you a much more intimate view of Stuttgart allowing views of the ...
...Schlossplatz, the planetarium, the opera house as well as the train lines coming into the station below you. For those feeling unfit there is a lift to the level directly below the observation platform that unfortunately closes if there is high winds but there are also displays on several floors up the tower. The other floors are also well worth a visit with interactive displays outlining the Stuttgart21 project (www.stuttgart21.de (unfortunately ... Read review

Fernsehturm (TV Tower)
Review of Television Tower (Fernsehturm), Stuttgart by StereoMike1983

Advantages: Great views of Stuttgart and surrounding area
Disadvantages: None, unless you suffer from Vertigo

Located on the outskirts of Stuttgart the Fernsehturm offers the best views in all of Stuttgart. For only 3€ you can go to the top of this 150m high tower from where you can see the city of Stuttgart and surrounding area. There is also a reasonably priced café/bar, which is well worth sitting in and enjoying the view without the wind blowing you around. To make the experience better, get the U-Bahn 15 from the city centre and you travel up the hills ...
...at the tower and from there it's just a 5min walk. Alternatively, get the U-Bahn 7 which is quicker but less scenic. Get off at Waldau or Ruhbank station for the tower. If possible, visit the Fernsehturm twice, once in the day to sample the view but then again at night. Sitting in the bar watching the lights of the city is really nice. The tower was opend in the mid 1950's and was the first of it's kind in the world. It appears to be well kept ... Read review

Wilhelma Zoo
Review of Wilhelma Zoo and Botanical Garden, Stuttgart by StereoMike1983

Advantages: A great array of animals to see
Disadvantages: Animals are stored in small cages

Wilhelma Zoo is located a little way outside the centre of Stuttgart but is easy to reach by the U-Bahn 14 from Hauptbahnhof station in the city centre. It has a great array of animals in a nicely laid out park. Prices to get in are really acceptable although the lack of good open café facilities when I visited mean that the visit can only last about half a day. I visited during the winter however and there do appear to be cafés and shops, which ...
...include: Elephants, Rhinos, Tigers, Leopards, Polar Bears, Giraffes, Zebras and many more. The park is laid out in such a fashion that it is easy to explore and you can easily see all of the animals be they in their cages on outside pens. (Be warned, I visited during the bird flu scare so no birds were on display) Prices in the summer are: Adults 10,80 € Children (from 6 to 17 years of age) 5,40 € Schoolchildren and students 5,40 € Other famly ... Schlossplatz - Stuttgart City Centre
Review of Palace Square (Schlossplatz), Stuttgart by StereoMike1983

Advantages: Central, two nice palaces
Disadvantages: Not a lot to do

...The name Schlossplatz translates at Palace Square and this is because the area is flanked by the two Palaces of Stuttgart. The Altes Schloss (Old Palace) sits on the right of the square with the Neus Schloss (New Palace) dominating one side of the square ahead of you. The Altes Schloss was built in the 1330's and was a royal residence for much of the late 1500's. It was virtually destroyed during WWII but has been subsequently rebuilt to its former ...
...the Baden-Württemberg region and it costs 3€ to enter. I personally didn't visit the museum so can't review what that itself is like. The Neus Schloss has a distinctly French feel to it as it was built in a Baroque style in the mid-to-late 1700's. It was used as a royal residence in the early 1800's and as with the Altes Schloss, it had to be completely rebuilt following it's destruction during WWII. Today it houses the Baden-Württemberg state government ... Read review
