History of the Summer Place ---------------------------------------
The initial construction of the Summer Palace began in 1750. Emperor Qian Long (Qing dynasty) built the garden to celebrate his mother’s birthday. The construction took 15 years to complete.
In 1860, the Anglo-French Allied Forces invaded Beijing and set fire to the garden. In 1888, Empress Dowager Ci Xi made the garden restored with the funds embezzled from the Imperial Navy. The construction had lasted for ten years and after completion, she renamed it "Yi He Yuan", meaning Garden of Peace and Harmony.
In 1900, the garden was plundered again by eight powers—UK, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Japan, Russia and USA. This time, nearly all big temples and halls were destroyed and only one survived.
The palace rotted for nearly fifty years, when it was restored soon after the Communist takeover. Nowadays most of the buildings have been completely restored. People still call the garden "Yi He Yuan".

The Summer Palace has two entrances, one is the East Palace Gate and the other is North Palace Gate. Most visitors enter the garden from the East Palace Gate.
Summer Palace can be divided into three parts, administration, residence and scenery browsing area. The administration area is the place where Ci Xi dealt with state affairs and received officials. Residence area mainly consists of Hall of Jade Billows, Garden of Virtue and Harmony, and Hall of Joyful Longevity. The Kun Ming Lake and Longevity Hill then serve as the scenery browsing area.
Personal Experience -----------------------------
One of the best ways to experience the park is to rent a boat at the lakeside. There are no restrictions on where you can row, and it is fun to try to paddle beneath the seventeen-arch bridge.
You can get 50% discount if you have a student ID card, or you are in the army, or you are disabled.

...in orderly fashion around the Summer Palace, near Beijing in China.
This was the first time I realised we were foreigners in their country. The little ones, were very amused at our small party of three Kiwi's (New Zealanders) and they showed us in no uncertain terms that we were a bit of a rarity when we visited, to learn more about their Chinese rulers' way of life.
The Summer Palace is an attraction where being fit and able to walk long distances ... ...Hearing the names of the Summer Palace, Imperial Garden's features is enough to describe this beautiful world-remown park: Tower of Buddhist Incence, Hall of Benevolence and Longevity Hill.
The day we visited there were many thousands of Chinese people walking around, just like us, seeing how the Chinese rulers since the Liao dynasty have enjoyed their summer breaks in peace and tranquility.
The buildings are just outstandingly beautiful, with ...

Advantages: almost out of this world Disadvantages: none
The Summer Palace is quite exceptional and a must for all visitors to Beijing.
I went there as part of a tour so I was not allowed the pleasure of an unhurried visit and one where I could spend my time leisurely.
But what a place and it is one I shall not forget in a hurry. It has a beautiful lake and wondrous buildings to enjoy but, before you go do make an effort to get hold of a guife book and read up a little first otherwise you do miss some ... ...really stand out for me was the covered walkway built exclusively so that the empress would not get wet on her way to the theatre. It is not only the longest of its kid in the world but is decorated in an exquisite way.
The one thing you will not like however, is the food. Whatever you do do not eat in the palace's restaurant. ...

Advantages: Beautiful and Big Disadvantages: Too Big
The Summer Palace is probablt the most spectacular site in Biejing after the Great Wall. It is a great big artifitial and there are small hills around it that are made from the ground removed from the lake. There are also some spectacular buildings built around the side that you can walk around. Once you have got to where you want to go you can get the boat back across the lake to the entrance or the small island in the middle of the lake. It is ...

Advantages: great enjoyable seighseeing Disadvantages: some site is not well managed
The SummerPalace (Yiheyuan) was a very interesting place. The view just too good to be true, water of Kunming lake so clean and wide, and air is so fresh, for it's placed in Wanshou mountains. This palace was very large area, so you cant go inside and look everything here in just one day. The first visit from morning until dark you just see 1/5 area, for you have to walk non stop.
While you walk, the most often you will see is the hand painting ceilings and pillar, colored with red, blue, green, and with, sometimes gold. Gold color means king colors. Just king's stuff that using gold color.
So if wan to visit this place, plan visit it in several days, not just one day. ...

Advantages: Fantastic art work, pedalows, great scenery Disadvantages: busy, too much work for 2008 olympics
I visited the summerpalace about two years ago. If I remeber correctly it was about a 45minute journey form where i was staying with family in Beijing.
The SummerPalace is one of the palaces that the Emporer's (of Beijing) used to stay in.
Unfortunatley when I went I wasn't able to see the whole place as there was a fair amount of construction work going on for the the olympics 2008. But although I couldn't see everything it was still a very enjoyable trip.
I would highly recommend the trips you can take around the lake their on a pedalow thats great fun.
There is also a feature their called The Long Corridor which is actually an open air corridor outside that is raised above the ground. The emperor would walk down this to show is superiority from the poor people. There is some really interesting and unusual art work to see ...
