What you can see?
The Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake are the two big areas of the Garden.
1. East Palace Gate
It's the front entrance to the Summer Palace. The gate in the middle was for the emperor and empress. Now you can walk along the gateway like an emperor.
2. Tower of the Fragrance of the Buddha
The Tower is in the peak point of Longevity Hill. Its height is 41 meters with three storeys. It's the must see site of the park.
3. Long Corridor
The long Corridor is at the foot of the Longevity Hill. It's more than 700 meters long. You will not miss it if you lead to the hill directions. It was built only for imperial family to avoid strong sunshine and rain fall. There are over 10000 painting pictures on its ceiling with some Buddhism stories.
4. Seventeen-arch Bridge
It's a very beautiful bridge, 150 meters long and 8 meters wide, that links the East Dyke and South Lake Island of Kunming Lake. It was built at Qianlong period (in 1736-1795). The shape of the Bridge looks like a new moon.
5. Suzhou Street
Historically the street was made for emperor's female family members who can not go out the Capital to experience the South China Fair. The street is about 300 metres and has over 60 shops there you can shop as well as have a look of ancient business custom. Incidentally the shop staffs all wear clothes in the style of Qing Dynasty. You can also dress like people in Qing Dynasty and take pictures.
Normally the 5 tourist sites are choices by all tourists. Beside these I do definitely recommend you visiting the Beijing Opera show in a garden called Deheyuan. I watched it once and found it very impressive.
Summary: must see if you visit Beijing

Advantages: Fantastic art work, pedalows, great scenery Disadvantages: busy, too much work for 2008 olympics
I visited the summer palace about two years ago. If I remeber correctly it was about a 45minute journey form where i was staying with family in Beijing.
The Summer Palace is one of the palaces that the Emporer's (of Beijing) used to stay in.
Unfortunatley when I went I wasn't able to see the whole place as there was a fair amount of construction work going on for the the olympics 2008. But although I couldn't see everything it was still a very ... ...can take around the lake their on a pedalow thats great fun. There is also a feature their called The Long Corridor which is actually an open air corridor outside that is raised above the ground. The emperor would walk down this to show is superiority from the poor people. There is some really interesting and unusual art work to see on the ceilings of the corridor. There are also small holdings their you can look in where the emperor's would have ...

Advantages: Many attractions, good environment Disadvantages: too far from city centre
The Summer Palace(Yiheyuan) was a very attractive place. I have been there twice. It is a bit far from the Beijing city centre, which is normally takes 40-50 minuts by taxi, and the price is about 80-120 yuan, which is about 6-8 pounds. I do not think you can go there by underground, but I am sure there are some other public transportation that will take you there. If you go there by bus, its only 5 yuan,( 3 pounds)
Attractions inside.
The whole ... ...Most of the attractions in Summer Palace is based on the Mountain. There is a very long lounge on the mountain, which is the longest, 728m in total. There are many painting on every pillar of the lounge, about 14000 in total. Another famouse attraction in the mountain is Foxiangge, which is similar to a temple, but its only for the King's Mother's fiesta the buddie. It is now becomes an attraction though. There are so many other attractions on the ...

Advantages: great enjoyable seighseeing Disadvantages: some site is not well managed
The Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) was a very interesting place. The view just too good to be true, water of Kunming lake so clean and wide, and air is so fresh, for it's placed in Wanshou mountains. This palace was very large area, so you cant go inside and look everything here in just one day. The first visit from morning until dark you just see 1/5 area, for you have to walk non stop.
While you walk, the most often you will see is the hand painting ...
