Advantages: Lots of pubs Disadvantages: No decent food in any of them
...In a town so stuffed full of good pubs with good food, why is the Lewes Road area such a desert? Once upon a time the Counting House did good food, then it became "No man's an island" although due to lack of custom it should more probably be called "No man inside".
The Gladstone doesn't do lunch - "Packet of crisps mate?".
The food in The Bear was once good, but it now quite awful. Poor quality, and I suspect poor hygine judging by the times I've had an upset stomach folling a meal there. We sometimes go there at lunchtime, but I'll no longer eat. The only saving grace is that the beer is cheap!
Is a good pub with lunchtime food REALLY to much to ask for?...

The decor is pretty much as you would expect from a typical Edinburgh pub, but with a lovely wooden beamed ceiling. The only problem with this pub is that, being long and thin, it is not suitable for really large groups of people, and can become quite busy in the summer. However, there are a few tables outside, if the weather holds...

...in line with the village the Trust now run an annual Garden competition which awards nearly 40 prizes every year. The aim is for the village to maintain the same look as when it was first brought into existance. I can say that the gardens are all in beautiful condition and very attractive all year round but my favourite time is in the spring. Not only are the gardens of peoples houses spectacular but also the roadside boarders, areas of green and general public pathways are beautifully kept and I have yet to see them looking tatty or dishevelled in any type of weather.
