A great conference venue but not ideal as a hotel

Advantages: Good rooms, well organised conference facilities
Disadvantages: If you aren't there for a conference, you could feel very 'left out'.

I'm a member of an industry association that holds a two day meeting every year in spring and we move the venue around between different hotels, typically in the Midlands. Last year we were in Rugby at the Dunchurch Park which had excellent conference rooms but dreadful accommodation. This year, the organisers found a new place for us to use - Ettington Chase near Stratford upon Avon. I travelled down from the North West on the day of the conference and my sat nav had no problems finding the hotel. When I pulled off the road into the car park I found a very beautiful old building that looked like a Victorian vicarage but was completely swamped by the size of the new wing. As so often happens, the website shows lots of pictures of the old building and not so many of the rather characterless red-brick block that provides most ...

Ramada Hotel and Conference Center,

Advantages: large selection of conference rooms for businesses
Disadvantages: no entertainment for those not in a conference,

I stayed at the Ramada Hotel and Conference Center, Edmonton, for 18 days in October. The stay was not a comfortable one. The check in counter was lined up upon arrival, and always appears to be lined up. The Elevators are ODD. You never know what will happen when you get in one when it finally shows up at your floor. The beds are hard. I was put on a waiting list for a fridge and in the 18 days never received a fridge. The wireless internet was unstable, sometimes allowing me to hook up, sometimes shutting down in the middle of an email. It advertised as wireless but I had to use the cable the majority of the time. There is only two washers and two dryers (that take up to two hours to dry one load), which seems inadequate for the number of rooms in the hotel. The staff at the front desk and the restaurant are somewhat unprofessional ...

Callum Park Equestrian Centre

Advantages: Friendly, dedicated staff. Excellent choice of horses.
Disadvantages: The price (but that is the same everywhere).

I have been having riding lessons at Callum Park for the last two years. I am sure that I have challenged some of the instructors, as I am in my 50s and had not ridden for 30-odd years! Everyone is helpful and the instructors are willing to let you progress at your own pace (helpful when you have had a fall and lost confidence for a while). Although a bit pricey, the horses are rested for two days each week, and never work for more than four hours on any of the other days. I have found that there are still many riding establishments that are prepared to work their horses every day - you might pay a little less for your lesson, but what about the welfare of the horse? My daughter also has lessons at Callum Park and has made good progress. Hacks are available in the Summer months, and there is an indoor school and two large outdoor ...
