I went to Sunny Beach last year and enjoyed it. It's a purpose built resort with a good variety of restaurants and bars. Theres a few clubs as well and ive seen some strip clubs so there's something for all tastes! Alcohol is incrediby cheap, I found a pint of lager for 25p just off the main street of pubs!! You'll be hard pushed to spend all your money.
There are a few local foods that you should try, not sure of the bulgarian name, but its vine leaves stuffed with rice and is served with natural yoghurt, really nice! The soups are good as well, its an ideal chance to try food you dont normally as its so cheap you could buy something else if you didn't like it!
Apart from the food and drink there are other attractions. Our Rep from the Hotel we stayed in was Bulgarian. She said that she could walk about the resort at night herself without worry. I never did this but its reassuring to know that locals have no worry or concern about doing this, and there are always people around so the resort is safe. The promenade where a lot of the restaurants and shops are is well lit which again is nice for safety,
The beach is clean as is the water. Most of the hotels look onto the beach and there are literally about 5 stemps from the front of the hotel onto the beach so if you've forgotten your book, suntan lotion or fancy a break from the sun there's not far to go at all!
The locals are all friendy but there's a lot of pirate goods out there, beware of the tobacco, my fiance bought some only to find out when got home to the UK that the pouches of Drum had been opened, refilled with cheap, damp tobacco and had been resealed closed! The cigarettes i bought were fine, but have your wits about you when purchasing gameboy games, dvds, tobacco etc.
There's another resort about 20 mins away by car/bus from Sunny Beach called Sozopol which is where locals tend to go for a day out. I'm not sure how good the trnasport is, I'd imagine notr very good as we stayed in Sunny Beach the whole time apart from being taken to Sozopol by car. Bulgaria is joining the EU next year so I think prices will increase a lot so travelling to there before next year would be the best thing to do if you want a cheap holiday.

BTW - the stuffed vines leaves are dolma or domades. Souvlaki is a kebab - a proper kebab on skewers rather tahn the meat sliced off the rorating spit you get in kebab places in the UK> Fiona

I'll be in that area next year when i travel around the Black Sea - I think we'll be in Sozopol rather than Sunny Beach though - not many private rooms in Sunny Beach. Fiona

Advantages: Cheap hoilday, not overcrowded, friendly people, fantastic food, beer 30p a pint,Not a 'tourist trap' Disadvantages: Street vendors harassing you, hygiene in toilets, quite a long journey, can be crowded at PEAK times
