Advantages: large, good atmosphere Disadvantages: a little bit out of the way
The Sunnyside Pub and Restaurant is one of the best ' traditional' Northampton pubs. The location is perfect - easily accessible from a main road, but set back, and surrounded by trees. The building itself is massive, and the Sunnyside are big on family entertainment, so there really is something for everyone: climbing frames and stuff outside for the kids, a games room, music in only some areas of the bar.
The restaurant is completely ... ...the Christmas period - The Sunnyside is semi-famous for its Christmas spirit, and several families I know book tables every year on Christmas Day.
If its the bar, and the drinking potential of the pub you're interested in, then the Sunny still doesn't disappoint.
The restaurant is completely cut off from the bar area, so not only can you eat your meal in peace if you wish, you also get a real restauranty feel, that sometimes you can miss in a pub restaurant. The food is typical pub fayre - Sunday Roasts, steaks and the like, and it's well presented, and well worth the money you pay for it. The portions are generously served - make up your mind at the beginning whether you want a starter or dessert, because you won't be having both! I've never had to wait particularly long for food, and the staff are happy to accomodate any size party. The only time of year you'll need a booking is over the Christmas period - The Sunnyside is semi-famous for its Christmas spirit, and several families I know book tables every year on Christmas Day.
If its the bar, and the drinking potential of the pub you're interested in, then the Sunny still doesn't disappoint. The bar offers a huge range of drinks - from a number of traditional ales to shots, shooters and cocktails. Drinks are reasonably priced, and there's always some kind of offer going on. The bar staff are all great - friendly and efficient - they enjoy their job, and it shows.
The one problem I would have with the Sunnyside is that its a little bit out of the way. It's within twenty minutes walking distance for me, but its in completely the opposite direction to any other forms of entertainment. If you want a meal and a few drinks, or just a few drinks and an early night, then the Sunny's one of the best you'll get - great food, great prices, great atmosphere, great people. If you're after a pub crawl, and then a night on the town, I'd avoid it - you'll spend a fortune in taxis.
