Sunshine, not by Danny Boyle!

Advantages: History of Hungary come to life
Disadvantages: Long, occasionally unconvincing

Sunshine, directed by Istvan Szabo, is an award winning co-production between Austria, Germany, Canada and Hungary. An historical film, the story weaves through 3 generations of a Jewish family in Hungary from the turn of the 20th century to the communist regime post 1956 examining issues of family, torn loyalty and the effects of our personal and national history upon our lives. The film follows the lives of 3 generations of the Sonnenshein family, all played by Ralph Fiennes, through the intense upheavals of the period. Ignatz Sonnenshein is a political conservative loyal to the Emperor even changing his name from the too Jewish Sonnenshein from which the film takes it's name-being the German for sunshine-to the more Hungarian Sors in order to forward his career. He falls in love with and eventually marries his cousin Valerie who has ...

Enjoy the Sunshine

Advantages: Visually stunning
Disadvantages: A bit chaotic towards the end

The decision whether to watch "Sunshine", the newest collaboration between director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, was always going to be an easy one. Our sun is dying, condemning the Earth to a permanent Winter as its rays are no longer enough to provide heat. A crew of 8 have set off in Icarus 2 to try and drop a large bomb into the heart of the sun in an attempt to reinvigorate it and warm up the planet once more; they're essentially there ...

Review of Sunshine (2007) DVD

And the winner is... Little Miss Sunshine

Advantages: Great story and characters
Disadvantages: None

Little Miss Sunshine is a bit of a different film to the type that I enjoy watching but none the less it is one of my favourites. It first came out in the cinemas in 2006, so is a couple of years old now. Little Miss Sunshine is about an American family. They are not the perfect family that is normally depicted in films though, they are a bit rough round the edges. The dad Richard (Greg Kinnear) is a life coach who is trying his hardest to become a successful business man but failing. Mum Sheryl (Toni Collette) is trying to do her best for her whole family but can't help arguing with Richard. Grandpa Edwin (Allan Arkin) has been kicked out of his home for taking drugs and so the family have to take care of him. He loves spending time to help prepare Olive for her beauty pageants though. Olive (Abigail Breslin) is the youngest member ...
