There is not really an awful lot to do in Surat Thani. It acts more like a 'gateway' to the south of Thailand - the train from Bangkok stops here and various coaches and boats take you west (Krabi/Phuket/Phi Phi) or east (Ko Samui/Ko Phag Nan). Wandering through the town it was interesting to see 'provincial' Thai life, there were certainly less hustlers than the main tourist drag and less concessions were made - of course (this being Thailand) it wasn't difficult to get a tasty meal! In summary, an interesting break for your journey but nothing to hold you here for too long
