Advantages Advantages Great fun, great exercise, Croyde is a good break, and a very nice summer resort to visit

Disadvantages Disadvantages Can be dangerous if you are unfit, or unprepared

I was lucky enough to be introduced to surfing at a very young age, living in the West Country where it’s easy to get to good quality, friendly surfing spots in reasonable time. I grew up on the North Devon coast; so playing in the water came naturally. At the age of 14 I was introduced to 'real' surfing, and haven't looked back since. Surfing, if you have the chance to do it is one of the best ways to keep fit and the feeling it gives you is just amazing, that you really need to try it for yourself. I would urge anyone just to give it a go, well worth it! As a really young kid I started ... more

Advantages Advantages Laid-back, pretty, excellent surfing

Disadvantages Disadvantages Busy in the summer, rip currents

Croyde is situated on the North Devon coast and is an ideal holiday location for surfers, families and couples. Croyde is a small village set in the countryside in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is very pretty with lots of thatched cottages and old houses. The main attraction for many though, is the long sandy beach which is also one of the top surfing destinations in the country. The village itself features a couple of surfing shops, a couple of pubs, a couple of ice-cream parlours and a shell museum. If you go there, try the Thatch (pub) which sells a wide variety of good quality ... more

    Advantages Advantages mmm beach

Disadvantages Disadvantages Not one person overheard saying the word 'gnarly'

I have both been told and witnessed for myself that Croyde is an excellent site for surfing. It's beach is well suited to generate good waves from a regular onshore wind that is enough to satisfy the surfing pro yet not put off the inexperienced. Sadly an excellent site for surfing is brings to my mind something that uploads quickly. I don't surf and have no intention to start so what could this small tourist town in north Devon possibly have that would interest me? Not only me I might add, in July of this year myself and 23 other males (predominantly of the non-surfing variety) headed for ... more

Advantages Advantages Excellent fast, powerful waves.

    Disadvantages Disadvantages Busy, busy, busy.

I have read the other two op's about Croyde, which are fine but have nothing to do with surfing in Croyde, so to fill the gap here is the scoop. Do you like slalom ski-ing ? Cause Croyde will introduce a whole new sport to you, slalom surfing, everytime I have been the surf has been so busy I have had to swerve all over the place to avoid mowing people down. The waves are fantastic despite the crowds, there are three main areas, the main beach which is a sandbar (sand bottom), a shallow reef and a point break. The reef and the point break are for experienced surfers only as the waves are ... more

Advantages Advantages Small, friendly and fun

Disadvantages Disadvantages Sometimes hard to find somewhere to eat

I first visited Croyed about 7 years ago, this was the first time I had been to Devon and the first time I had been camping. My husband and I sent our little boy off to his grandmas and headed off to Croyed. It is a lovely little village not yet spoilt by all the large over powering companys. We stayed on a very small campsite in the heart of the village called Apple Tree Farm. It is mainly where all the surfers stay as it's very cheap about £3 per night per person and he usually lets our kids stay 2 for 1 as we go back every year. In the village there are a few pubs which get very busy in the ... more
