Croyde Bay - surfing and fun

Croyde is situated on the North Devon coast and is an ideal holiday location for surfers, families and couples.

Croyde is a small village set in the countryside in an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is very pretty with lots of thatched cottages and old houses. The main attraction for many though, is the long sandy beach which is also one of the top surfing destinations in the country.

The village itself features a couple of surfing shops, a couple of pubs, a couple of ice-cream parlours and a shell museum. If you go there, try the Thatch (pub) which sells a wide variety of good quality food. The Thatch has an excellent atmosphere, and the staff are laid-back and friendly. Or try one of the tea-rooms for a Cream Tea.

Croyde can be busy, especially during the summer months and parking can be a problem.

The shell museum is really interesting with a wide selection of shells and exhibits from across the world. It is in a very small shop, and only costs about 20 pence to get in.

The beach here is one of the best in the UK for surfing. It is best at low tide, and with a South-Easterly/North-Easterly wind. It can be dangerous though, and rip currents often occur. The beach has been awarded a blue-flag and is usually clean. It is also fun for children because there are rock-pools at one end.

There is lots of countryside to explore and walking to be done. Every year the village has its own 'Viking Festival', where the locals all dress up in Viking costumes and have various events on this theme.

I live in Braunton, about 3 miles away and spend a lot of my time surfing in Croyde.

If you are going to stay here then visit the local tourist information site at http://www.northdevon.co.uk/area/woolacombe.htm. Remember that Croyde becomes very busy during the summer, and it may be worthwhile coming here off-peak - things may not be as lively, but you can really appreciate the beauty this way.
