The Surfers Hotel in Newquay, has an amazing location, very cheap rates, and a twenty-four-hour bar. What more could anyone staying in Newquay want from a hotel??

The hotel is situated at 1, Narrowcliff , which is literally across the road from Tolcarne Beach. Once you've stumbled down 130-odd steep steps anyway.. (going back up again is a caner!). Tolcarne itself is a beautiful beach, surrounded on the land-side with cliffs, but going out a long way at low-tide, and gets some surf second only to Fistral. It has lifeguard cover, as well as a couple of shops and cafés.

The hotel site is just on the edge of the town centre, literally a hundred yards from Barracuda nightclub, Berties Uptown bar, and importantly, a cash point! It's about a five to ten minute walk to the centre of town, a fifteen to twenty minute walk to the opposite edge of the centre (by walkabout), and a half hour walk to Fistral Beach.

As for the hotel itself... well the rooms come as either twins, doubles, four bed, six bed, or eight bed. I've only been in a four bed, but needless to say, it was cramped! Two bunkbeds, with the sort of floorspace that would allow for maybe one more bunkbed, but nothing else whatsoever, if you can imagine how cramped that means! Every room is also en-suite, but the toilet/shower-rooms are all windowless and tiny. Some rooms have mirrors, some don't. The windows are all single-glazed, so take ear plugs! The arcade machines across the road start up at like 0900 with their very annoying noise, the rubbish collection every day sounds like the end of the world, and I swear the seagulls take shifts for sleeping just so they can cry all night long. And that's not meant to mention any snoring from your room-mates!

The decor of the hotel in the corridors etc. is very homely, much more like a converted house than a soulless modern hotel, so is very welcoming and friendly.

The centre of the hotel, the bar/lounge area, is very comfortable, with plenty of sofas and armchairs everywhere, and is decked out how you might imagine a surf lodge to be, i.e. with surf boards everywhere and lots of surfing posters. They have a large tv with freeview or something. There's also a pool table for 50p a pop, as well as a full-sized snooker table for a tenner an hour. And a fruit machine that has Alan Partridge as its voice. However, the drinks prices that they offer aren't that attractive, £2.50 for a pint of carlsberg, £2 for a pint of coke or juice, 20p even for water! Outrageous. They also offer a large selection of foods, for slightly more reasonable prices.

The front desk is manned 24hrs a day, which provides good security, as you have to sign in at night.

As it's a family run operation, you get to know the staff, who are all very friendly, and if you befriend the barman he can be very generous!

Prices start from £15 per person per night in off season, up two £23 for weekends in on season. I've had difficulty finding self-proclaimed hostels in europe for cheaper than that, so these prices are incredible! Of course, as I've tried to describe, you do get what you pay for, i.e., not much! But I've had an amazing time there twice, and the slumminess of the rooms has not detracted from it in any way whatsoever. I fully recommend this hotel to any groups of teenagers thinking of newquay! Much better than camping and only slightly more expensive..

The website of the hotel is www.surfershotel.co.uk , and the webcam atop the hotel is at http://www.camvista.com/england/other/cornwall_surfershotel.php

Good review. Was in Cornwall for a while, it's a really lovely place. Newquay has changed so much over the last few years but is still really nice, the surfing is just brilliant there, and like you say its reasonably priced too ~ sarah
