Sometimes, when I have to visit the head office of the company I work for I have to stay here, as Harlow is rather a long way from home.
The kindest thing I can say about the Churchgate is that it isn't the Green Man, the other place in Harlow where the company puts its staff up. That place is truly horrible and the subject of another of my reviews.
When we hear that the Green man is full and we have to go to the Churchgate it is usually a relief. Not that any of us enjoys going to Harlow but if we have to it is better to stay here.
On arrival you will be checked in by an efficient if somewhat disinterested receptionist who will provide you with a key and a number and dismiss you from the desk. The rooms are just like the rooms you get in any commercial hotel so need little description from me. If you want to know more look at any travelodge or similar branded hostel for the weary.
The bar has an average range of drinks, being Essex there are several lagers and some indifferent bitters and was so unremarkable that I didn't linger. Fortunately, a few minutes away is the high street in Old Harlow and a wide choice of places to eat out.
The restaurant and bar menu is just like everyone else's and after the first night I didn't bother eating there again.
The "Homemade" Sausage and Mash had an interesting variant, the centre of the portion was totally frozen. Obviously the "Traditionally prepared" meal was re-heated on the wrong setting.
It pays to be suspicious if the meal arrives less than three minutes from placing the order.
The room was clean enough and the bed comfortable. The only thing that let the place down was the noise from the herd of chavs that find the car park an entertaining place to pass their evenings. They probably haven't yet learned how to open doors of turn TVs on. Some of them had learned to walk without dragging their knuckles on the ground.. But that's Harlow for you.
One of the girls in the office pointed out that Old Harlow is the posh end of town. I can only wonder what the rough bit looks like!
My recommendation is based on the assumption that you need to spend a night in Harlow.
