My partner and I stayed at The Swan Hotel in Newby Bridge last weekend and i felt compelled to share our experience with others...
The hotel is located at the Southern tip of Lake Windermere and overlooks the River Leven. It is in an absolutely beautiful setting, is accessed via a small bridge and is set right back from the main road. I think in total it has 55 bedrooms, some of which are suites - but we opted for a standard double during our stay.
We were in room 313 and this had a river view - as do all the odd numbered rooms i think. The room was very spacious and the bed was extremely comfy (although very soft). The bathroom was perfectly pleasant, although decorated in a slightly 'old fashioned' way. You get a few select Sky Channels in the rooms and also broadband is available. The minibars are well stocked but, as always, was slightly overpriced.
The hotels public areas were refurbished about a year ago in a comtemporary style and all look beautiful. There is a gym, pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi for people staying at the hotel - this is really lovely and all looks recently refurbished too. We used this about 3/4 times during our two night stay as it was so relaxing and also not too busy.
There are two restaurants to choose from - The Roland Restaurant and the River Room. The Roland resturant is the more expensive one, we didnt eat dinner here but this is where breakfast is served - and the breakfast was to die for. All sorts on offer including scrambled egg with smoked salmon, full english and all the continental options. We did eat dinner in the River Room which is very reasonably priced and the food was excellent.
With regard to things to do in the area - the main thing is obviously walking. We didnt really get to explore fully the things on offer as it did rain the whole time we were there and that put a slight damper on things.... All in all i think it is a fantastic place to go and relax and the hotel certianly allows this.
The staff that we dealt with were all very polite and more than willing to help, and overall we couldnt fault our stay at all. We had maid service twice a day (morning and late afternoon) and these was always chocolates on the pillow when they had been in!
For any more information the website is also very good and gives very accurate information/pictures. www.swanhotel.com
Sorry forgot to mention prices..... The hotel encourages guests to stay more than one night so generally you get a better price if you stay 2 or more nights. We paid £99 per night with breakfast, although prices can be up to £165 per night. The website is the best place to check as it gives exact prices for all dates.
