Back in the early eighties my uncle worked for the United Nations based in Geneva and I was lucky enough to spend several holidays in country. One of the most eagerly anticipated parts of the holiday was always the Swissair flight. Swissair were a different class to the other airlines I've flown with. Ignoring the cattle class of the charters, they comfortably beat BA, Lufthansa and American on comfort, leg room, food, service and style.
So, when I returned to Switzerland recently after a gap of almost twenty years, I told my wife all about the joys of flying with MY favourite airline.
Unfortunately, the helpful, smiling, courteous staff that I remebered had been replaced by bored looking automata who would speak reluctantly when spoken to, and appeared to be under strict orders not to smile. The best airline food I ever tasted had been replaced by toy-town rolls in plastic wrappers, no need for the old "real" cutlery there then. My leg room had come down, my level of indignation had gone up.
Topped off by the worst landing I've ever come across arriving back at Heathrow and my wifes look of "THAT'S your favourite airline?" I can only claim to have been disappointed.
Don't get me wrong, Swissasir are not a BAD airline, they're just no longer a GOOD airline, and they used to be the BEST airline.
