Advantages: Cheap to eat out, lovely beaches, nice warm climate Disadvantages: Not much to do
Turkey is quite a popular holiday destination for the British due to its beautifully clear waters and warm climate. I stayed just outside Izmir for two weeks and I have to say that I have no intention of returning there again. Don't get me wrong - many people go there and find it a most beautiful place for a holiday and indeed you may love it. Well let me tell you why it was not for me.
I actually went out there after being invited by a friend of mine, who is Turkish. Most of the holiday was spent by the beach which is perfect for me because I like to relax in the sun when i'm on holiday - for me there is nothing better. The sea is gorgeous...so clear that when we went out to deep waters you could still see straight to the bottom. I can't stand waters where they are full of rocks and seaweed so the sea around this part of Turkey I ...
Advantages: Decent enough lager Disadvantages: Nothing special
In case you haven't realised it, I'll drink anything. Well, not quite anything. What I mean is, when I encounter a beer I've never tasted before, I like to remedy the situation asap. And so it was when I noticed my local Wetherspoons selling stubby little bottles of Efes Pilsen for a mere £1.49. I was intrigued. The shape of the bottle was not unlike that used by a great many Belgian brewers, a chunky affair with three gradually narrowing bands around the neck.
This beer doesn't hail from Belgium though. Oh no, it journeyed all the way from that other Mecca of beerdom, Turkey.
Efes Pilsen was first brewed in 1969 and is now the No1 beer in Turkey (according to them) with an estimated 80% of the market. It's exported to many countries, being especially popular in Russia. Luckily for me, it sneaked its way over here as well ...

Advantages: Best tasting larger money can buy. Disadvantages: limited places to purchace.
I first tasted Efes in the Northern side of Cyprus. What a beer, clean, crisp and very refreshing. since returning to England, (after 3 years in cypus), I was at first distraught that I couldn't get it any where. I even consulted a beer, wines and spirts expert friend of mine and he informed me that, like many other continental beers, they don't brew it under licence in any other country. Therefore they couldn't make enough for large export to supermarkets in England. Well luckily for me Tesco now stock Efes! It's still brewed in Turkey, so the flavour is just as good. At just under £4 for four bottles it's not too hard on the wallet. For me it is the best larger in the world, try it!
