Diamond review  AH, A GROTTO, BUT WHERE'S SANTA?

Advantages: Unique. Friendly. Educational. Views. Value. Location
Disadvantages: Able Bodied Only. Very Crowded in Summer.

...GETTING TO THE RHONE GLACIER - THE PASSES Along the lines of "it's not the destination that counts, but the journey there" whichever direction you approach the Rhone Glacier from, you cannot help but to be impressed, no awestruck, by the stunning scenery. Also in my case, simply amazed by the skill and technology employed by the Swiss engineers who built these incredible alpine passes. Unless arriving by tele-transportation (yet to be invented) ...
...metre (7103ft), we approached the Rhone Glacier from the little town of Gletsch, which was in 1602 situated immediately below the mouth of the glacier. Now the glacier is some distance and a big climb from Gletsch. The big climb takes place on the breathtaking Furka Pass, which has a summit of 2431 metres (almost 8,000ft) just a couple of hairpins above the Belvadere Hotel. A SURPRISE ATTRACTION…… …..well it was for us at least! On the final hairpin ...

An experience I will never forget!

Advantages: Good fun
Disadvantages: Not suitable for everyone

...Switzerland's longest toboggan ride, the Preda-Bergün Schlittelabenteuer. The journey to Preda is somewhat of an adventure in itself. Almost all of the visitors arrive here via the Swiss rail network, the Rhätische Bahn. I travelled Preda on the Bernina Express, a glass roofed train that runs just twice a day. There is an additional cost to travel on this glass train compared with the standard trains, which depart every hour and travel between Chur ...
...the extra couple of quid as I considered it to be one of those once in a lifetime opportunities. Preda sits at the peak of the Albula Pass, 1,789 metres (5,780 feet) above sea level. The air at this altitude is pure but is thin, causing rapid breathing spasms and it does take a while to get acclimatised. To put this relative height into perspective Britain's highest mountain Ben Nevis is a mere 1,344 metres high (4,409 feet) in comparison. When ...

Take a step off the tourist trail in Switzerland

Advantages: Beautiful medieval city, relatively cheap, lots to do, excellent transport links
Disadvantages: none

...beautiful lakes and rivers around Fribourg, the Roman ruins at Avenches and the cheese factory at Gruyeres with very little effort! Geneva, Zurich, Montreux, Lausanne, Bern and Basel are all also easily accessible by train for longer day trips. Fribourg is a wonderful medieval/Renaissance city with a strong cultural and artistic heritage. If you fancy taking a step off the tourist trail you will be well and truly rewarded. ***Tourist websites*** ...

Butterfly Paradise

Advantages: Inexpensive, open on a Sunday, lots to see, appeals to all age groups
Disadvantages: Uncomfortable on a hot day

...The next dome contained the Papiliorama, thankfully in the light, but with another plastic curtain to pass through. Entering the dome was an amazing experience, the area has been laid out as a tropical garden with a rising and falling path winding its way through it. The array of flowers is simply breathtaking so it took a few seconds to notice the amazing jewel like butterflies which inhabited this area. The website says that this hall contains ...
...pleasant experience than the tropical Papiliorama, as a cool breeze kept us from overheating. Further down the path was Pongo Plaza, the children's playground. Set amongst a number of streams and bushes its very easy to lose a child around a corner, but it was my daughter's favourite part. Every piece of equipment had been built using a proportion of natural materials so there was a fantastic snake seesaw, a wooden crocodile on springs, and several ...

Titlis Rotair

Advantages: nice views
Disadvantages: we didnt have enough time

Titlis Rotair - Mt Titlis When we were on our honeymoon my husband and I had the chance to go to Mt Titlis in Switzerland. The tour was organised through the Cosmos tour we were doing of Europe and cost us 60 euros each to do the tour. This drove you to Engelberg and up onto Mt Titlis. The Titlis Rotair is the world's first revolving cable car took us to the top of Mt Titlis. **THE TOUR** You have to check in at the bottom and get 2 gondolas to the ...
...go onto the Titlis Rotair which is a revolving cable car and it will bring you up to the glacier station which has shops and restaurants. The Titlis Rotair is round and you can see out the window. It means you can get 360 degree views of your surroundings. There is a circular station in the middle which does not revolve. It is very strange being brought up in the cable car and being spun around (very slowly may I add) at the same time. You can get ...
