Sydney (Australia)

Sydney (Australia)

From September to December 2005 I was seconded to a suburb of Sydney, Australia which, as secondments go, was a pretty juicy one for a 23 year old to land. As readers of my other pieces will attest to I got out and about in Australia during my time there, but since Sydney was the place I was ... Read review

Maybe Tonight?

Advantages: It's SYDNEY, y'know the one with the opera house and the bridge?
Disadvantages: It's a city that not only sleeps but also stops eating hours before bedtime

...my time there, but since Sydney was the place I was working 4 days per week, every week, I also got to spend a fair chunk of time in the city.

Arriving in Sydney is generally by air on a domestic or international flight though some energetic souls may also drive in having road-tripped it from Melbourne and/or Canberra. The airport is not an especially noteworthy one but it does have one outstanding feature: Krispy Kreme donuts. Can ...
...
The centre of Sydney is surprisingly small - you can literally walk across the city centre without any trouble - but the city runs out into numerous suburbs to all sides. Many tourists naturally choose to stay as close to the famous landmarks as possible, but for a view of the bridge or the opera house you'll pay an extortionate premium. That said, I would recommend staying vaguely centrally as otherwise you'll quickly have to familiarize ... more

The beautiful harbour city

Advantages: Lots to see and do
Disadvantages: Can be expensive, Very hot in summer

I've lived in Sydney for since 2005 now and I have to say it's the most wonderful city. There really is something for everyone here. First, there's the obvious Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The Opera House is the most amazing building when you see if for real. I really didn't think that much of it until I moved here and stood outside of it. If there's nothing showing there that you fancy seeing, then I'd recommend one of the tours. They offer ...
...small shopping mall, Wildlife World, Sydney Aquariuim. The maritime museum there is great, you can board an exact replica of the HMS Endeavour, the boat that the original fleet sailed here on in 1770. At the other side of Darling Harbour is the Chinese gardens, which is absolutely stunning. It's so peaceful in there, and yet you look up and realize that the city is just across the road. It'll cost you about $6 to get in, but it all goes to the upkeep ...

Sydney Harbour Bay!

Advantages: Awesome place/great photo opportunities!
Disadvantages: I was jet lagged when we saw it!

...tour consisted of flying to Sydney for 3 days, then to New Zealand for 9 days, then back to Brisbane in Australia for a final few luxurious rugby free days and finally home. A lot of flying was involved but for someone who wants to be a pilot that doesn't really bother me! I won't let you know how we did in the rugby as I am focusing on the places, the people and the experiences. We arrived safe and sound in Sydney after our mere 19 hour plane journey, ...
...is about my experiences of Sydney Harbour Bay, including Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera house. So when we first arrived in Sydney at 5.30 am we were collected by our "legendary" driver "Stevo" who took us on an initial tour of the city. As this was a tour rather than a holiday we tried to save as much money as possible and this coach driver although friendly was a bit reckless when driving and didn't really tell us anything about the city ...

Far far away in the distance.....

Advantages: So much to do, great atmosphere
Disadvantages: Expensive to get to, not so good if you dont like busy cities

...get that perfect picture of Sydney harbour bridge and the opera house - get to the left side of the boat in order to get the best view. This is all rather surreal as you realise that you are actually there and can take pictures just like the ones you see in magazines and on television. You have enough time to eat and take in the view without having to rush so enjoy it! On day two it was up early to go to the harbour bridge with the intention of ...
...get the best views of sydney other than from the air. You should book in advance though as at certain times of the day and year they sell very quickly and as they only take up ten at a time you could be waiting a while.... The climb itself takes around three hours, but this includes preperation time and a pretty thorough practice session before you go up. During this time they show you how to walk and give you all the equpiment you will need, including ...

Doing the Harbour

Advantages: beautiful scenery, much of the city is accessible and it's quite cheap and very easy to do a tour
Disadvantages: can get rather blustery

...as Australian landscapes go, the Sydney Harbour goes down as being one of the most iconic and familiar, close behind Uluru and of course, the Sydney Opera House, which goes hand in hand with the harbour. The Harbour is a natural wonder and is undeniably the jewel in the crown of Sydney, and is basically the centrepiece of the city upon which all else is focussed open. The famous Bridge crosses it, the Opera House faces it, and hundreds of thousands ...
...The problem I face with Sydney is getting there. It?s a good 2000 kilometre round-trip whichever way you decide to do it. This time around instead of driving, we took the train (we being Valerie and I, since she was down for a holiday just very recently) from Melbourne to Sydney, which was ultimately regrettable. 11 hours of travelling through pastoral land is normally conducive to sleep, but of course you can?t do that when the seats don?t extend ...

There ARE Easier Ways To Walk Over

Advantages: Unique thrill
Disadvantages: A kill or cure for vertigo

...fair stab at drawing the Sydney Harbour Bridge from memory – it’s one of the world’s classic structures along with other icons like Tower Bridge, the Eiffel Tower and so on. Carrying roadways, railways, cycle-ways and pedestrian footpaths across the harbour since the 1930’s, the Bridge has recently taken up a new mantle, that of a “soft” adventure. I’m talking about scaling it on foot. Sounds dangerous – ...
...its life, its upper girders have been the domain of seagulls and painters (the boiler-suited variety, not French impressionists). Now you too can climb up and over the “Coathanger” as it’s affectionately known. For A$125, you get either the view or fright of a lifetime, depending on your head for heights. You need to budget a whole half-day for this venture. Safety is taken very seriously (naturally) and this occupies the first ...

Does Oz Rock... Airport Tour Part II

Advantages: The fuel stop on the way to Sydney is great
Disadvantages: but Sydney airport's a bit miserable to say the least...

*Part two in tour of the five world continents. I have checked out both Europe and Asia, and now I’m on my way to Australia. My memory is incredibly pathetic, so I can only remember about the airport in Sydney. But I will also tell you about Narita Airport in Tokyo – one to check out on the way. You probably have the image of excellent airports in Australia, but after the collapse of Ansett, one of the main Australian airlines, they’re all a bit half empty, or so I am lead to believe. And I’m sure your mind is thinking of a complete dump in Tokyo. We’ll see… Why’s Sydney the best... No, I never said it was! The thing is, the same as English people are pompous about everything English, you also seem to enjoy boasting about excellent things in any other English-speaking country ...

Travel..Dodge! Sydney Australia hotels.

Advantages: Location and proximity to centre.
Disadvantages: Everything about this hotel services.

After Traveling around Australia for Months I have stayed in many hotels across the East Coast as you will discover in my Reviews. As more and more of us are traveling to Australia, I think its useful to see what are hotels we are assured of, are actually what we are getting after thousands of miles of traveling to our dream destination. We booked The Travelodge Sydney because me and my partner thought its a reputable name, Travelodge all over the world. Fine within the UK, not great but always comes up to standard. We had four days in Sydney and booked here! what a mistake. We arrived at the Hotel after traveling from Bribane 2-hours away. We were very tired and wanted to get some sleep after traveling from 4-am we needed a little sleep. Our hotel reservations were to check in early, but to our dismay they didn ...

Duty Free Shopping at Sydney Airport

Advantages: Clean & friendly
Disadvantages: not much

For tourist looking for Lanolin cream this Austraian Speciality, look no further than the duty freee shop after passport control, there is a variety of brands and prices are quite reasonable as well. For fans of Jurlique and Bloom the two well known skincare brand from Australia. My advice is buy at the airport. Not only is it cheaper and tax free and the selection is just as good as any department store. For Jurlique, I recommend the Rose had cream and Lavender Hand cream both smmell divine and price is abot 1/3 of UK price. For regular traveler, I recommend one of their floral water "Travel Blend" it is a blend of Lemon, Bergarmot and Grapefruit and it is very refreshing! Also for fashion lovers, there is a good selection within the duty free for sunglasses, Australian fashion desingers wear including Akira Ishirogawa, Lisa Ho ...
