I was there in 1996 after two weeks in Great Barrier Reef. Finding a cheap place to stay was not a problem. Loads of cheap hostels and backpackers around and really cheap. Hanging around the harber was really relaxing and interesting. Always loads of tourists and backpackers. The Rocks is a very great place to be, where you could find the markets and lots of bars and restaurants. Botanic Garden is very huge and easy to get lost. One evening I found myself lost in the big garden and hardly found my way out. Really terrible experience as there's not so many lights and it's really very dark.
