Before I went to Australia I had this image in my head of the SydneyOpera and the Sydney Harbour Bridge, this was the first thing I thought about when I thought of Australia, so the first thing I did when I arrived was drive down to see it for myself! I was so excited, I almost had to pinch myself as it all felt like a dream but I really was in Australia at last.
Standing by the Opera House was a dream come true; it really is a remarkable site and one I will not forget for a very long time. The structure and design is fascinating and I spent a good while walking around it all. The view of the Harbour Bridge opposite is startling it is so huge if you look closely you can make out the small figures of the brave climbing over the top of it.
The thing I love about Sydney the most is its beaches, with so many to choose from you have no excuses for not spending a day soaking up the sun. I highly recommend the Coogee to Bondi beach walk, it takes about 2 - 3 hours but it is really worth it if you want to see some of the beaches that Sydney has to offer.
You can always take a ferry trip to Manley Beach which is a great day out, really pretty and a great view of the Opera House and Bridge from the water. If Manley is looking too busy for you then why not stroll down to Shelley Beach next door.
Palm Beach is an hour bus ride away but if you are a fan of Home & Away it is worth a trip on a Tuesday as this is when they will be filming.
The City itself is much like any other, full of the hustle and bustle of workers and tourists; Sydney has a good public transport system to help you get around much like the London Underground.
Blue Mountains - The Blue Mountains are truly stunning and a must see while in Sydney. Depending on how long you have you can do a day trip or perhaps spend a weekend camping in the mountains.
I was on a tight schedule and opted for an organised coach trip costing about $75. The trip included transport their and back and also a guide. Make sure you take your walking shoes as the Blue Mountains offer a great deal of tracks to explore, the highlight was seeing the Three Sisters and having a ride on the steepest train in the world.
If you are on a working Visa then Sydney is the best place to make some money offering highly paid office work. I am going back to Australia this January on a work visa and will be heading to Sydney first to earn some money.
Of course Sydney has great appeal for New Years Eve with its mind blowing fore works display. It is well worth it but a word of advice, book your accommodation well in advance.
Sydney is full of backpackers and tourists and plenty of accommodation is available for all budgets, most attractions and sights are in the City Centre area.

Seeing your pics brings back really good memories for me. I was last in Aus in 2003 and had a great time there. My sis is going for a year in 2010 so planning to go down and visit then.

Advantages: It's SYDNEY, y'know the one with the opera house and the bridge? Disadvantages: It's a city that not only sleeps but also stops eating hours before bedtime
