Our first trip we were met at the harbour and shown to Captain Morgans apartments above the gold shop. You then realise that the roof room is a must for the visitors, if you mention that you have that ... ...went again.
Symi is such a peaceful island and if you get the chance to visit would fully reccommend. You have to be aware that they don't have any water on the island so it arrives in the harbour by boat and is then pumped around the island. If the boat is late on water in the taps when you wake up.................so what you have water in the fridge to make a cuppa or visit Yannis he will make you a drink.

You then realise that the roof room is a must for the visitors, if you mention that you have that roof space you get "Oh we have tried for that for a couple of years, you are so lucky" And guess what we were.
Our rep had told us about the Kala Strata and worned us of the steep steps but the view was just OH...........You just have to keep stopping and looking. Half way up is the piano bar, nice for a drink, a little on the pricey side but again a view worth the money.
Keep going to the top and you come to the Plastic Chairs. There are two bars here, but we just stayed at Yannis bar. We had a drink and Yannis asked where er would be eating. Next door is Georgios and he reccommended that to us.
We went in and you are invited to look in all the pots that they have cooking, choose what you want. They have the grill going for souvlaki and if it is in the pots or on the grill you can have it. We stayed and ordered and the food was just great. The locals sentd the children there for hteir supper/meals and there is a strream of tin foil wrapped parcels making the way along from the restaurant to home. None of the K.F.C. here.
We ate there every night and on one second night a donkey arrived in the the restaurant to be sang to by the locals "Happy birthday" and as quick as it arrived it went again.

The island tour is a must, by boat. Take the tip of sitting under the cover on the boat it gets very hot in the heat of the day and that space is at a premium.
Under Captain Morgans is a super gold shop which sells hand made items, not that you find in great supplies. If you stay in Captain Morgan apartments you do enjoy a discount, which my husband took advantage of when getting me a 49th birthday pressy. Everytime I wear it it brings back memories of a great stay.
Take the plunge, go to Symi and stay out of the harbour if you can during the day but be about at night when the day trippers have left.
We visited Symi 3 years ago when we decided to go ISLAND HOPPING with the Fountain Travel Club. The Quatro Fontanas.
We had booked a fantastic deal with First Choice. Flight to Rhodes with two weeks accomadation at Lindos for £126 per person for two weeks.
We spent the first 3 nights at Lindos, which coincided with England being knocked out of the European Cup on penalties, very quiet next day around the pool.
After the 3 nights the four of us ... ...had booked the accomadation in Symi thru the symivisitor web site. Two rooms in a Villa for 25 Euros a night per room.
On arrival we were met at the quay by a Very friendly young girl from Symivisitor. She had organised a Taxi to take us up to the top of the Town which is extremely steep and high. She motored ahead on her scooter.
She met us at the top and guided us through the laberinth of alleys and steps, rucksacks would have been better than ...

...is you will either love Symi or hate it. Just a short ferry ride away from Rhodes the two islands couldn't be more different - in fact when the tourist ferry arrives at Symi each day most of the Symi holidaymakers head away from the main harbour and explore the rest of the island only returning when the tourist ferry heads back!
If you want a peaceful holiday away from the regular tourist routes then Symi is well worth a visit. In the main town ... ...steps from the harbour so Symi is not for the unfit or the disabled but if you don't fit into either category you could have fun there.
There are lots of tiny little bays dotted around the island - you can take a boat trip each day to a different bay if you want. Some have a taverna on the beach some have nothing so you need to take a picnic or else travel there by boat which offers a barbecue on board. There are no shortage of boats and water taxis ...

Advantages: Some lively parts & some very quiet parts!Rent a quadbike! Disadvantages: Packed in Summer,do not book with Manos!
In early 2007 I began looking for a holiday as a few friends (all students aged 18-19) and I had decided we wanted to get away for a while. The usual 'young persons drinking holidays' came up, such as Zante, Magaluf, and Faliraki, but the thought of going to a really rowdy place like Faliraki turned my stomach! Its the idea of going to a place so crammed with English people that you may as well have just gone for a week in Croydon, and having thousands of drunk and sunburned English people mooching around that just didn't appeal to me.
On the other hand, a few years earlier I had visited the small remote island of Symi in Greece, where the locals all stared at you and the only activity to do was to sit on the one, ridiculously small and pebbly beach. So, although my friends were eagerly pushing a holiday in Kavos or somewhere ...

Advantages: Quiet ,friendly, a good touring centre. Disadvantages: Aircraft noise
; The highlight of our holiday became the hydrofoil trip from Rhodes town to the little island of Symi our first stop before carrying on to Turkey. As the boat slowed down we could see the brightly coloured houses dotting the cliffs around Symi harbour giving this tiny island an air of festivity. The harbour itself was alive with the hustle and bustle of an open-air market with stalls selling all kinds of goods, leather, lace, herbs & spices, special olive oil in gift packs, fish caught fresh that morning, numerous types of food including the Greek nougat that I'm so partial to, a plethora of delights to suit anyone.
It was here that I met my namesake, "the tuna lady". Sadly Greece is full of unwanted cats and kittens many starving to death or riddled with disease brought on my malnutrition. Everywhere I went I carried tins of tuna to feed ...
